It just seems like overkill.
That's not to say that the remastering might not sound better, but I strongly suspect that the use of 24/96 PCM will be a somewhat trivial factor in the sonic improvement (assuming an improvement is indeed detected). ;-)

24bit downloads by Pristine, or the original lps.
But I contend that we'd like Pristine's "activist" remasterings whether or not they're issued in 24/96. And perhaps 24/96 does give the engineers more "headroom" when they're in the process of remastering the historic recordings. Nevertheless, I still think that 24/96 is overkill when the extremes of dynamics and frequencies of the historic sources themselves lie comfortably within the confines of CD-quality sound. It's not a big deal of course, since most listeners today have the ability to play music in 24/96. And of course, I'd say the same thing if the reissues were done in DSD - it's just overkill. But perhaps it allows the companies to eke out a few more dollars on each of our purchases and thereby stay in business! ;-)
I agree except with your remark " most listeners today have the ability to play music in 24/96 ". No, only guys like us. Most listeners wouldn't even understand what the @!&@ you mean by 24/96! They may unknowingly possess the technical resources but as for ability...

Their iphone, ipad, iTV or roku ? None of these devices can play 24/96 files. DVD players can resolve hi-rez, but the masses are dumping dvd players and dvds in favor of streaming from the above mentioned, resolution restricted devices.
We are in the middle of another paradigm shift in consumer media consumption. Streaming is displacing disc ownership. Providers will control bandwidth, and resolution.
. . . my wife will suffer going to audio shows with me (one day for each show), but she also always warns me, "As soon as you start talking about 24/96, I'm out the door!" ;-)
So. . . of course you are right about my 24/96 claim. (And Travis confirms it!)
Agree.
