Aside from the fact that the Dorati performances are available only as 2-channel incarnations (on vinyl or CD), I wonder if ANY subsequent performances were really any better. I mean, the Mercury years were the era of Dorati in his prime, and those 35 mm recordings were (IMHO) the apex of Mercury's recording technology!
Follow Ups:
It's OK, a bit opaque, but IMHO it doesn't hold a candle to the Dorati Prokofiev Scythian/Orange Suites.
Nevertheless, de gustibus and all that.

. . . it seems that you picked one of the most outstanding recordings of its era as an example of being opaque - just seemed a little perverse, that's all. ;-)
Minnesota, or the Copland Rodeo with Dorati. Maybe the CD is better.Edit, I forgot to mention the famous (but boring) Dorati Firebird.
