I have Nikolayeva's 1962 Moscow recording of the complete Op. 87 on three Eurodisc LPs. The album claims the recordings were done under the supervision of the composer. The pianist re-recorded the set several times, including once for Hyperion. I don't know which recording was used for the CD issue in the photo.
The 1962 recording generally has very good sound, but there are some short patches of pitch instability on the LPs, which are probably on the master tape. The playing is very technically fluent. Some pieces are played very fast. Each prelude and fugue is fully characterized to emphasize their individuality. The performance never gets boring. I much prefer this first recording over the pianist later recordings.
