I once went on the road with Andrew Lloyd Webber's roller skating fiasco "Starlight Express" for 10 months playing alto/bari/clar./flute. The band had 3 synth's, electric guitar, electric bass, electric drums, all playing ridiculously loud. PLUS -- the tenor/flute player and I sat directly in front of a percussionist who played tympani and orchestral bells among other things. There was a little plexiglass between him and us, but it was of little help.
The 2 trumpets and one bone in front of us played right into plexiglass in front of them, which sent their sound back to me and the tenor/flute player. To add to that all the horns were miked and fed into monitors. Despite the monitors I never heard a note when I played flute, and only heard clar. once in a while.
Eventually I was the only horn player who didn't wear ear plugs - a bad mistake on my part.
