sitting right in front of the trumpets....
Follow Ups:
I've seen Cleveland Orchestra oboist Frank Rosenwein with a set of tethered earplugs, which he'd use for passages with heavy brass/percussion behind him......
...Bassoons sitting in front of the trombones.
Instruments that simply make digestive noises don't get to choose.
first year my violinist daughter played in youth orchestra, she and seatmate in 2nds sat in front of timpani and percussion. :)
Honor group after playing Beethoven overture, 2015.
The present CYMO group is doing Mahler 1st tomorrow! 3rd and 4th movement! 😅
ear plugs are available in a large box at the stage entrances.
Many, many people in the orch use them.
It's LOUD on Stage in Davies Hall!
Its kinda surprising to me that orchestral players wear ear plugs. But for those sitting near brass or perc. its certainly understandable. I never felt I could blend properly and/or adjust pitch when necessary while wearing plugs. But looking back at some of the horrendously loud gigs I've played.....I *should* have worn 'em.
Hi all - I must unfortunately comment that all professional orchestral players will lose on average 20% of their hearing over the course of their careers. I have started using earplugs more than I used to, but probably not nearly as much as I should.
A Concert Bass Drum can sound like a Bomb going off.
Honest.
I know people that it doesn't bother, tho
I still think it's a mistake to endure some Sound Levels w/o plugs.
And really, there isn't much that's louder than Big band in full roar.
Bob Mintzer compared a Big-Band to putting your head in a Jet Engine.
NOT Your Band, of course.
Rick?
Rick?
No, no, I didn't mean to suggest Your Band can't play loud, that's not what I meant...
I once went on the road with Andrew Lloyd Webber's roller skating fiasco "Starlight Express" for 10 months playing alto/bari/clar./flute. The band had 3 synth's, electric guitar, electric bass, electric drums, all playing ridiculously loud. PLUS -- the tenor/flute player and I sat directly in front of a percussionist who played tympani and orchestral bells among other things. There was a little plexiglass between him and us, but it was of little help.
The 2 trumpets and one bone in front of us played right into plexiglass in front of them, which sent their sound back to me and the tenor/flute player. To add to that all the horns were miked and fed into monitors. Despite the monitors I never heard a note when I played flute, and only heard clar. once in a while.
Eventually I was the only horn player who didn't wear ear plugs - a bad mistake on my part.
with the talking.
