Well, for once it looks like I'm first here to mention an artist that I'm late in discovering.
Hiatus Kaiyote is an Australian "future soul" band who have been around a few years. Their 2013 debut album Tawk Tomahawk is very good, but their second album Choose Your Weapon (2015) is outstanding. Apparently Prince was a fan, and they've mingled with various individuals on the US scene. When my daughter first played them for me a couple days ago, I thought Chris Dave had to be the drummer, but no....it was these guys. All four musicians are very strong and the writing is full of harmonic depth and surprising syncopations. One of the nicest new things to hit my ear in a long time in that style. See what you think!

Follow Ups:
I bought the CD..... Great album.
Late 80's/early 90's R&B style, with some atonal jazz thrown in for good measure...... Great vocals too.
Thank you much!

I'm not crazy about the harsh electronic sounds employed in some of the tunes/sections, and for the duration they're used. I preferred the mellower (for lack of a better word) sounds, as heard on the last tune/section for example.
Obviously a talented group.
The sound on this recording doesn't strike me as harsh at all.... But I can imagine system linearity playing a big role here..... There isn't a lot of dynamic compression on this recording.

...the "Moog through a distortion pedal" sounds that dominate a few of the tunes ("Swamp Thing" comes to mind). They do get to squaring those off pretty hard, almost into Atari territory if you will, but listening to the record again through the lens you describe, it still hits my ear mostly pretty gently, and always melodically. I do think the drummer has a lot to do with what I like here. He (Perrin Moss is his name) has an unusually light touch for the genre, and his poise is impeccable. I ordered their first two albums on vinyl today...I'm looking forward to hearing this music not streaming over YT.
I find myself wondering if it's time to get into downloads.
