I just got around to reading my last newsletter from Presto Classical and saw that a new recording by Peter Donohoe of the Shostakovich Preludes & Fugues is on sale.
I own the recording by Ashkenazy but I don't care for it, poor sound quality. Any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks
Follow Ups:
Roger Woodward on RCA LP. The CD transfers aren't so good, on his Celestial Harmonies label. For me, among the very greatest living players. Apparently, Richter liked his playing enough to invite him repeatedly to one of his festivals late in his life.
The other is Sherbakov on Naxos (+2:)
Would love to hear Donahoe in this music. I hope that Sokolov will tackle the cycle before long, but I. Not holding my breath...

Regardless of anything else, you're among the highly favored.
Best,

I will not claim to have heard all the available recordings, but I didn't like Ashkenazy or any of the Nikolaeva versions. Jarrett is superficial. The Scherbakov set on Naxos is all I need (in addition to Richter's selections, and the sound quality is good.
But don't miss this live performance by Terrence Judd of #15:

Of course, given my attitude about Shostakovitch, you can take my recommendation for what it's worth. ;-)
Nevertheless, I did have this album in my LP days and can vouch for it.
