I was nosing around the Hyperion site and came across this:EDIT: Image replaced and reduced - apparently Hyperion didn't like my linking to their image. Strange - here I am giving them free publicity and they aren't cooperating. :-) Replacement tiny image is from iTunes.
I don't know how many other recordings of this concerto I already have, but I gotta have this one too, especially since it will be available as a 24/96 download, and despite the participation of the HIP orchestra. Jurowski is also one of my favorite younger conductors. There are some samples of this disc already available on the Hyperion site, and the fast movements of the Mendelssohn do indeed seem. . . fast (as befits HIP orthodoxy!).

I would agree with Thornhill on this one. Also, Mendelssohn himself was well-known for preferring very quick tempi in general, both as performer and conductor, FWIW.
I'm not a Mendelssohn hater. I like his music just fine. But with 10,000 recording of Mendelssohn and other warhorses around, why not something different for a change?

Not that often recorded, I fear, for good reason! ;-)

The decision to play to the last movement of the E minor as fast as possible is less driven by "HIP orthodoxy" and more to do with violinists wanting to show off their technical prowess. Mullova/Gardiner take a pretty leisurely pace in the last movement -- 7:17 vs the typical 6 minutes and less -- resulting in an unusually lyrical finale.
To me, the 3rd movement of the Mendelssohn concerto isn't just about technical fireworks, there is also wittiness and puckish good humor that can be lost if it's played at the speed of light, which it often is.
The link is broken, so I visited the Hyperion site and was pleased to see that this is with babe violinist Alina Ibragimova. I have a Hyperion disc of her performing a Hartmann concerto which I enjoy. I'll probably get this when it comes out. Thanks for the tip.
No, we must blame the HIPsters for everything we don't agree with.

There are always exceptions of course.
BTW, it's not that I don't agree with fast outer movement tempi in the Mendelssohn e-minor, but in this case the tempi do line up with what one tends to hear from the HIPsters. Although I expressed myself with some mild sarcasm (I can't help myself sometimes), there was no value judgement intended in describing the choice of a fast tempo per se. Believe me, I'm not blaming HIPsters for this! ;-)
Sure you're not.
