He was honored for his work bringing together young Palestinian and Israeli musicians. A very classy move and a well-deserved honor.
And the REALLY amazing part: seeing a classical musician on American network TV!!!

Well, the co-founder was Palestinian.
To quote Wikipedia, 'the West-Eastern Divan is a youth orchestra based in Seville, Spain, consisting of musicians from countries in the Middle East, of Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and Spanish background. The Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim and the late Palestinian-American academic Edward Said founded the orchestra in 1999, and named the ensemble after an anthology of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe......The aim of the West-Eastern Divan is to promote understanding between Israelis and Palestinians and pave the way for a peaceful and fair solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict'.
I am sure Said would have been carrying the flag with Barenboim had he lived.
Incidently, Barenboim and the West Eastern Divan youth orchestra have just finished playing all 9 Beethoven symphonies (wonderfully) at the Proms. He must have sprinted from the Albert Hall to the Olympic Stadium to have made the ceremony on time!

It was also good to see Simon Rattle and the LSO, though they didn't really show that much of him, as he was (intentionally) upstaged by Rowan Atkinson in that 'Chariots of Fire' number.
