in 1957...the original master was on a MASTER TAPE probably run at 15 IPS You cant exceed that quality..No matter what High Rez digital you use..

Yes - of course. The copy generally cannot exceed the source (in this case, a digital copy of an open reel master). I hope that was clear from my OP.But there are other factors at work. As I know from my own experience, some master tapes from that era have deteriorated, and it sure would have been nice if we could have gotten a 24/96 copy before the deterioration started to creep in. (Check out the Everest reissues from Classic Records.) For an even more recent example, I just bought the complete Melodiya set of Glazunov symphonies recorded in 1982, with Rozhdestvensky conducting - some people say this was a digital recording, but its type of deterioration shows analogue characteristics. Maybe it was the particular Soviet tape formulations from that era, but some sections now exhibit such a wow that it just makes you want to run for cover (with your ears plugged)! Actually, you can exceed master tape quality - if you made a copy earlier on and the master tape has stretched (or otherwise deteriorated) in the meantime! ;-)

"Actually, you can exceed master tape quality"
No,you can't really exceed the pristine quality of the original master tape before any deteriation or stretching happens. All these remasterings really depend on the quality of the remastering and not the format. Garbage in, garbage out
