What's the world coming to?
Follow Ups:
I have wanted to punch out a few people at CSO concerts lately. Rude behavior is on the increase.
I think you might like it.
...the fight would very likely have been between a Brahms supporter and a Wagnerite. The audience famously fought each other at the first performance of Le Sacre . Now we fight over seat assignments. Is this a step forward, backward, or sideways?
That might get the seats filled.
I always thought the ultimate music "biathlon" would be performing classical pieces amongst judges, then doing three rounds of Olympic style boxing with a fellow contestant...........
Of course the fight part of the competition would be between contestants of the same gender.
See what happens when you mix estrogen and testosterone?
If, after being smacked in the head by the youngster, the older guy had beat the snot out of him!
That would have been way cool.
As I get older I always root for the older guy. Bernard Hopkins - Awesome!
"Man, that mouse is Awesome." - Kaemon (referring to Jerry, of Tom and Jerry fame)
I went to the fights in Chicago, and a concert broke out.

What provokes a guy in his 30s to start punching a 67 year old man in the box seating of a concert? The music had already been under way for quite a long time.
Did the elder guy repeatedly fall asleep and snore?
Did the elder guy talk during the performance?
Did the younger guy arrive late to find the elderly gent in his seat and lose it?
And then the younger guy takes off. It will be interesting to hear what the cause really was.

Gee, I hope the HIP advocate was battered around his ears & it improved his hearing enough so that he can now hear that listening to music played on dynamically restricted instrumentation is'nt necessarily better . Did it ever occur to the HIP advocates that composers might have been thrilled with the sound of well made modern instruments. It's not our fault if some modern day instrumentalists can't find ways to maintain their interest in challenging their performance level .
Cop it sweet mate, HIP is here to stay and will outlive you.
Do you actually perform any of the relevant music yourself?

And gladly would he learn and gladly teach - Chaucer. ;-)!

I'll concede your first point & I will admit to not really having much interest in most music earlier than Beethoven. While Period music may hold historical significance it's "voice" which was small to begin with becomes about the sound of the instruments more than the music. In retrospect, I should probably have not made my comments as they do lack a bit of sensitivity .
Sigh.
You're real good at self-limiting, at other people's behest, and unthinkingly as well.
The music and the sound and the point of it all are orthogonal, get over it.
HIP is not about making the sound small.
Try the Hyperion disc of Handel's Fireworks.

Well "Timmy", who said anything about making music without sound ? By small voice of (much) of this music I was saying that "for me" I really don't find a lot of "substance" beyond a certain "sound of the period" to the music. With your reference to Chaucer in your salutation , I'm guessing you are very enamored with most things "Early Period" related. I'm not. HIP reminds me of music for history buffs. I love music, this music not so much.If this attitude deems me a "music curmudgeon" then so be it. I find Handel almost interesting at times ,but only in small doses. Have a great day!
If you have a problem with the way any particular period's music sounds, and expect all music to sound the way you've gotten used to, be big enough to admit that.
But don't parade it as thoughtful or informed.
There is no period of recorded human effort that I am not interested in.
The most interesting is here and now, and our future with this planet.
I've been a successful change agent, so I'm used to dealing with 'that's the way it is' thinking.
I accept that lots of people 'think?' that way, but I don't respect it.
Because it manifestly isn't true.
I am bothered by a lot of 20th Century art and music, and I think the artists wanted us to be. Much of it is an honest response to the human story of the 20C which was a brutal denial of the 19C's positivism.

Why do you insist on pursuing how "I" view this music. I am not parading anything. What is "thoughtful" for one person is'nt necessarily for another person . How on earth did you come to the conclusion that I was attempting to do anything other than explain my view. If how I rationalize how "I" feel about something is'nt valid for you, that is perfectly fine by me. I don't understand the compulsion to diminish what I've had to say. I'm really not trying to start a cult movement of any sort. This will be the last I plan to discuss this as I don't think we're on the same page. Give it a rest, mate. It's really counterproductive trying to explain to me the errors of my rationalizations for one very simple reason, they are my rationalizations. I never raised the "I'm right" flag at any point. I'm not nearly as cynical of the 20th century as you seem to be, much of the great music that has been written this century, has been inspired by the state of the human condition & all it's complexities be they of a positive or negative nature. I for one am glad the plague is'nt the concern it once was.

I'll concede your first point "mate".
I was hoping it would be a fight over the music, just like in Paris before the War. Turns out to be a ticket dispute. Oh well. Things ain't what they used to be.-Bob
