Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
I've had Mye stands on my 1.6QRs for five days now and I'm posting today because I want anyone who is remotely considering upgrading their system or adding stands to know that IMHO the Mye stands made a quantam improvement in the musicality of my system.
Before going on, disclaimers are in order. I don't know Grant from Adam's housecat but both his service and the quality of his product are impecable. I don't consider myself in anyway an electronics/stereo expert but I listen to music daily and I know what my system sounds like with music from Diana Krall to Randy Travis and from Holtz to Aerosmith's Honkin On Bobo. For anyone skeptical, let me reassure you that stands do indeed change the sound of maggies and in my case, much to the better.
I've had the 1.6's for over a year; they're stock, run by a Myryad MA240 amp and MP100 preamp and biwired. CDP is a Marantz 8260 sacd/cd. The room is dedicated and the only room treatments I've needed were huge silk ferns(6 ft. by 4 ft.) behind each speaker and smaller ferns at each side at the first reflection point(thanks go out to the planar asylum tweaks section and countless "wasted" hours on the audioasylum).
I bought the Mye stands to improve bass and as advertised, they delivered. To my ear, the bass is deeper, fuller and richer. What is important to me, is that the bass fills out the overlying music adding weight and ending a sense of leanness that I heard/felt previously. The overall sound now seems fuller and more cohesive. Instruments and voices still have air around them but on dynamic passages there is now a palpable wall of sound. Voices are warmer on all genre and sibilance on pop/rock and poorly recorded cds is noticeably diminished. I particularly noticed improvement in tone/timbre on acoustic guitar, violin, cello and piano; I wish I could convey in words how much more musical information is reaching my ears and how much realism is added. Two final observations: The sound stage, while keeping its typical maggie depth, seemed to move forward a bit and the sweetspot distinctly expanded.
Again, my reason for posting today is to pass along my experience with stands. IMHO, they dramatically improve the listening experience, at least on 1.6's. If you are looking for stands I can highly, highly recommend Mye stands. If you are'nt looking for stands you probably should; I remain astonished at the improvement in my system.
I now resume my usual status of lurker.
Follow Ups:
I agree. I've had my Mye's for a year now. One question: Did you spike them? I did but ended up removing them because I think they sound better without. With the spikes I lost a little bloom on the bass that made a difference.
I agree that the spikes change the character of the bass and even the overall sound. I replied to rico below that I like the clarity I get with the spikes but the sound without the spikes is warmer? and the bass seems to carry more weight. The nice thing about the stands is there is enough bass that I'm ok losing a little; definitely a change from my maggies without stands. I'm sure individual room acoustics also will contribute to which sounds best.
I bought the stands for my 3.6s and it was a huge improvement over the stock stands. Thanks Grant.
I just got my stands about 5-6 weeks ago and I have to second the thoughts in this post. Although I have only seen glowing reviews of the stands, I suppose that everyone's experience will be dependent on all the typical variables of other stereo components, room size, acoustics and the like. However, I must give an overwhelming endorsement to Grant himself (and his ever so kind wife). You will not find better customer service and a person that not only stands (no pun intended) behind his product, but will do everything in his power to ensure that one is completely satisfied. Without going into monotonous details, I emailed Grant one Friday evening with a concern I had and no sooner than I had got up from my computer when I received a phone call from Grant's wife, followed by another call from Grant himself. It was a simple (and somewhat embarrasing) problem, but the assistance was there immediately. My wife was so impressed with the service that she wants to move to Canada as she believes you would be hard pressed to find the warmth and customer service that Grant provides almost anywhere. Well, we ain't exactly moving our Maggies yet, but the point here is if anyone is considering after market stands for their Maggies, Grant is the man. You can't go wrong with the Mye stands simply because Grant won't let you.
Are you using the spikes and have you filled the struts with sand or lead shot. Why or why not?
I'm still experimenting with the spikes. Maybe its my room setup, but I seem to prefer a slight tilt back to my 1.6s. I have a set of longer spikes for the front base of the stands so I can get the tilt using spikes all the way around. I've also been playing around with using a set of the normal size spikes on the front of the base and no spikes on the back of the base (if any of this is making sense to you). With the spikes on the front and no spikes on the back, I get more bass impact (dare I say "slam"). When using the spikes all the way around (front and back) I lose that bass impact, but gain more clarity. Its a trade off and I'm not sure which set up I prefer yet. I probably will not fill the struts as I occassionally have to move the speakers for those moments when the children out number the adults for our New Years and summer parties.
Me, I'd go for the clarity and further rigidity inherent in the spikes all around configuration.
I'm using spikes because after listening with and without I thought the image and clarity improved with spikes. In some rooms I suspect the stands sans spikes might be preferable. I have not filled my stands yet because I want to listen for awhile to the new sound then compare when the stands are sand filled.
Good isea on the sand. I did the same. But I found the sand improved things further, although the differnce was far less dramatic than adding the stands themselves.
I've had the Mye Stands on 3.6's for 6 months, with spikes and no sand. They made such a huge improvement that I've never thought about playing with spikes vs no spikes. Although I am thinking about adding sand. Whats the expectations of adding sand, is it worth it?Its THE BEST TWEAK I've ever heard period. Incredible bass extension, detail, focus they look great too!
I think there should be a party somewhere of Mye Stand owners. I suggested to Grant that we all me in Vancouver sometime. Its a bitof a hike from Miami, but it would be a good excuse to get back to the pacific northwest.
sand adds more stability and completely dampens the sound you get when you rap a knuckle against the hollow strut. I will admit that the difference is there but barely noticeable and of course there's no way to "A/B" for comparison.
I'll come to that party!I'm already here.
