Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

Inspired by the recent thread on room treatments, specifically front wall diffusion behind speakers, I found some low cost [$75 for 12 - 20" x 20"] diffuser panels [and somewhat visually appealing - WAF: approved] and installed them last night. The results were simply amazing ++++, this is clearly the most cost effective improvement I have encountered. Wider and deeper sound stage and most importantly a much more uniform FR, speakers totally disappeared. My wife, who doesn't really care one way or the other actually stated "I can't tell where the sound is coming from".
Follow Ups:
Diffusers make such a huge difference, don't they! You can't have too many either (I have 30 :-) ).
The only place a diffuser may not be a good idea is the first reflection points on the walls and ceiling ... maybe, depending on the room.
One more thing to consider: the design of the diffuser determines the frequency range that it affects. Thinner diffusers 3" or less only affect higher frequencies like > 1KHZ. To get lower they have to be more like 7".
Enjoy!

How did you arrive where you are? When did you know when to stop? Care to share a pic?
Okay short version: heard about live end-dead end design when I moved in and had this dedicated space in '82, and I put a lot of Sonex absorption in the front third of the room; 2012 got 3.7s to replace T1Ds and learned of REW, room modes, etc.; started with bass traps because that was the biggest problem (DIY fiberglass, about 25 eventually); started putting some diffusers on front wall and that made a huge difference; experimented with types of diffusers, and also placing over the MLP and beside; ended up using Vicoustic Multifusers (skyline type).
And over the past two years experimented with the Roose setup, which is where I am today.
This is a recent photo taken from the MLP. There are six diffusers overhead and two each side. Four on the back wall 10ft behind me.

Curious, did you also try absorption behind you? Not that it matters, just curious. The room looks very cool.
Do you have one side of the speaker fully blocked with panels?
Yes I've tried lots of combinations of absorption and diffusion and reflection around the room. I put together 2x4ft x4" fiberglass panels covered in speaker cloth to position as bass traps but they absorb mids and highs too. So I've moved them around and measured and listened. I can do diffusion in the back of the room because the wall is 10ft away. If it was much closer I'd do absorption. I have bass traps in all four corners and hanging across ceiling-wall corners too.
The 3.7s are open front and back. The tweeters are closer to the wall. Each has a 2'x6' wood baffle screwed to the leading edge closer to the MLP. The baffles help block cross reflections of the back wave. They also help with calibration with Dirac Live.
Here's a diagram.

Love the details! Thanks to the great sketch I completely get it.
I'd wager the majority of us need to work on ours, your posts will help plenty, thanks again.
Been watching this thread and the other, so I thought I'd try something, I made 2 4'x4' 4 inch thick Rockwool sound absorbant panels, hung them in refection points both sides, Paul Simon Graceland CD , It literally killed the sound, Harmonica was missing, some high freq in sound stage gone, imaging was slightly better, not sure what to think of this, but was worth the effort to find out how it would work :)

If a bare wall, and even remotely close, try them there. Otherwise yes, something absorption might tame things...
Good luck? LRS's should be auditioned?
Life is a dealer who doesn't care what cards you got, and is the final say on what cards you have. Maybe dimensions are subjective.
Just for starters those speakers should be twice that distance from that wall behind them? You're squeezing the bunnies too hard, and she's gonna scream, and then those other men, they'll come for you!
You cannot create space where there is none. Ears always know.
Or maybe I take "space" too literally? I've never made my walls disappear, is what I'm saying. I'm always in a room. And rooms, well, hey, I've had the opposite problem! I used to run Celestion 3's in a large common room. Well, nothing one can do, you know? Cards don't lie.

It looks like you have placed the panels parallel to the wall. Why? If you angle them you may not even treat the walls, because it automatically means that you spread out reflexion-distances, which in turn means that you spread out interferences and diffuse them.
Did you use the double sided tape to mount them? Is there anyway to use little hooks or tum tacks. Not too crazy about the tape.
Did use double sided tape (on 1" absorb. panels that were already there) as it is temporary, moving soon. I think small tacks or the like could be used as they are very light.
Hi Mark, if I deciphered your moniker correctly.
It appears that you placed your Maggies close to the 5' minimum critical distance from the front wall already. I can only imagine how much the added diffusion helps the clarity and imaging after that.
Well done.

Well done...
Just ordered some myself to complement Skylines. Arrives Sunday. ;)
