What does the LRS have over the .7 besides price,that makes it seem so much more popular?
Aren't they both the same quasi-ribbon, 2way and the .7 even goes lower.

I have had many Maggies in the past. The mq12,1.6 and 1.7. Not the I version. I loved them but eventually sold them. I purchased the .7 s about 2 years ago. After the hype,I purchased the LRS and they arrived in April after 12 long weeks. There are differences between the speakers. The LRS are very clear in the midrange. The .7s are a bit larger sounding but a bit muddier over all. I purchased Magnariser stands and used it on both. The LRS benefits most from them. I also use a very fast sub from Sunfire. A 10 inch woofer which blends nicely. Not sure if you are aware of the recent price hikes at Magnepan. I definitely think with the stands and sub the LRS is much better then the .7. It might actually be better then all the Maggie's I have had in the past. I also had a 3.6 which didn't work out well,my mistake as my room was to small. My fault. The LRS has some magic dust or something sprinkled on them. They are incredible ,but the require an amp with current. Maybe more so then the.7 happy shopping.
Basically, price. Also, price. And then there's price. :-)
The LRS also got some rave reviews and was on the cover of Stereophile, and it's newer.
But I don't know of anything that touches it at the price, for acoustic music, anyway.
Yeah but, it's the same size and specs as the MMG. So what makes it sound better than the MMG that gave it the rave reviews.
I guess it's just price and marketing.
Just like when I had my MG 12s, all the talk was about the MMGs and the 1.6. But I think the .7 is probably the sweet spot, just like the MG12 was for me. I am strongly thinking of going Maggie again, but it seems the only upgrade I can look forward to is a name change.

In fact I asked him here long before COVID point blank who designed the 30.7 since Jim was out of the picture and he kinda 'aw shucks' his way out of the question lol..

I 'think' when the MMG ended it was still using copper wiring on the mylar whilst the current line uses the aluminum wiring; although I could be wrong.I had both the LRS and Gunned MMG's at the same time and compared them.
They sounded similar with the G'MMG winning with more bass. That's not a knock on the LRS because at it's price it's still a winner; whereas with the G'MMG you'd have to start with a MMG and then begin adding upgraded pricing.

So don't you think instead of Gunning the MMG to just get better bass, you could have just got the MG12s.
It would have been much cheaper from what I remember Gun was charging for the pretty wood.
the GMMG is more in-line with a 1.6 in terms of bass and sound stage albeit room specific.And they're more than just a pretty face, it's got mundorf silver in oil caps underneath the hood vs the standard stock solens.
Problem is they don't get much air time in my house.
I was working overseas at the time and I wasn't sure how long I would work for this particular company (contract was annually). So from that perspective I wasn't sure that when I'd return I'd have enough money for an apartment, condo or a house. Also during that time Pete was kind of hinting he might stop doing the upgrades so I ordered the GMMG's just in case I ended up in an apartment or condo.
Well I ended up staying a little longer than I thought: over four years. During that time I bought a house and set forth with my original game plan of getting a pair of my dream speakers: MG20x's. Well 2-3 years went by and they weren't popping up online (they were, just not locally so I can audition them) but a nice pair of Duetta sigs did, in fact only about 30 min from my place. I was able to audition them and subsequently grabbed them while I was home on vacation.
As fate would have it about a year later a pair of MG20's popped up about two hours from my place. The guy was going through a divorce and wanted to unload them. I told him his price was too high and I wouldn't be able to audition them since I was overseas at the time.
Long story short, I got the 20's for an insanely low price plus a written guarantee they were in good condition. As an added bonus he drove them down and delivered them to my house. Having just gone through a divorce myself I kinda felt where he was coming from.
Well I didn't need two large speakers so I sold the Duetta sigs for almost twice what I paid for them. That was something I'd regret later because they really, really sounded incredible .
Well 8 years goes by and as luck would have it another pair of Duetta sigs pop up on my radar, this time only about 15 min from my house. Long story short again I now have all three: Duetta Sigs, MG20's and Gunned MMG's.
I have the GMMG's in the living room powered by my Emotiva's and the Duetta sigs powered by a Halcro amp in my den/dedicated sound room. The MG20's are also in that room.
I keep the GMMG's not only because they sound spectacular and are works of art, but also as a reminder that they'll fit any room 'just in case' I ever end up in a condo or apt. But I have thought of selling them since they don't get much air time.

Sounds like it's been a great journey, except for the divorces which always is a big setback.
I also heavily modded a pair of MMGs and MG12s with external crossovers, better binding post and Mye stands. I wish I had kept the 12s, but I traded up for some Tanmoy Definition DC12T, which I still have.
Well it's been about 8 years and I am iching for a change, but the Tannoys are so beautiful it's hard.
I would like to go hear the new models and refresh my memory of the Maggie sound, but there is nowhere down here on south Florida that has them for audition. That's why I have been trying to find out what's really changed between the 12 and the .7 besides their names.
I really like the 1.7i but it's a bit tall, and would cost me a third divorce. If I get the LRS I will be sorry I didn't go bigger, so it will probably be the .7.
I currently have a pair of both in-house. And I've been doing a comparison for the last three months.
.7's are much easier to drive. My volume decreased by at least 25%.
.7's are much less forgiving than the MG12's. My system did not have a bit of grain in it with the 12s at high-volume. The .7's sounded grainy at high volume, and seem to break up The frequencies.
In my room the .7's go much lower than the MG12's.
My REL S3 SHO sub could no longer be corner loaded and had to be to be pulled out and the sub crossover settings and volume changed quite drastically. More difficult to blend with the .7 then the MG12. Still fiddling with sub settings and placement for the .7's.
The REL corner loaded with the MG12 really pressurize the room. Even at low volume I had impactful base.
.7's The soundstage is wider and deeper and the imaging is slightly more precise within the soundstage.
10 to 15% more detail with the .7's. Not hyper detail but close.
The .7's are 8 inches wider apart than the 12s with much less tow-in and 2 inches closer to the front wall.
In my room the biggest difference and the weakest link of the .7's were the gaps in the frequency responses at the transition frequencies. Mids to highs big gap and lower mids to upper bass big gap. Thought it might be upstream but there's no sign of that with the 12s.
The 12s have sweeter mid range and a more romantic sound and the .7's are much more analytical with their presentation.
Musicality and goosebumps I prefer the MG12's.
The .7's are screaming for tubes somewhere in the chain. A tube preamp would go miles with these speakers. Because of the efficiency differences between the .7's and the 12s, I would not be afraid of a medium power tube amp.
I live in a small town home sitting near field, my system has to do double duty for music and TV/movies, so tube amps need not apply.
This is just my opinion, in my room, with my current rig and what I am hearing. To confirm what I'm hearing I am going to have two of my audiophile friends come over and I will swap out speakers and get their opinions, which I have not done yet. I have the location of each speaker marked out with tape and I've got the subwoofer crossover settings for corner loaded and pulled out all documented for a quick change when we do the comparisons.
I have been taking notes and working on a review comparison of these two speaker models.
I was going to post it on the Facebook Magnepan users group, but I'll also post it here.
It goes into much greater detail and I use 10 of my 60 of reference tracks as a comparison between the two. One of my playlists in Roon is references, familiar tracks so I can notice changes in sonics.
I really could live with either one of the speakers. The .7's I would have to do separates versus an integrated. Tube pre / SS amp.
As with any speaker there are trade-offs, for me it's a matter of prioritizing the best attributes of each. The .7's do everything better, BUT frequency response and musicality go to the 12s.
I most likely will keep them both. Two different flavors and designs from the same manufacture.

there's a substantial following of Magnepan owners on facebook including a Magnepan rep.
I'm sure if you inquire about the .7 a lot of folks will respond.
Other than great sound, what the LRS has going for it are two key factors: it's price, and it's size meaning it performs extremely well in smaller rooms as well as it does in medium sized rooms.I haven't heard the .7 but it's in an awkward line up position IMO; I wouldn't be surprised to see it exit stage left in the future due to the 'enormous' popularity of the LRS.

Some people believe the LRS has superior soundstage/imaging than .7. Steve Guttenburg is one their are others including myself, why this is I have no idea.
