Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
136.55.185.120
Hi guys, I have been interested in getting a pair of Maggies for a while now. The only thing that has kept me from acquiring a pair is my room. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment with a living room that is 11 by 19 feet long. I can meet the 3-foot minimum requirement from the back wall. However, I am only able to place the left speaker 1-foot from the side wall. Would this be a problem for the LRS speakers? If it is, should I go for the wall mounted MC 1?
I can also quickly create a diagram of my setup if it would help.
Follow Ups:
Well I did end up purchasing a pair of LRS for sale locally. I couldn't be happier! I'm now looking for a used subwoofer or two to go with it.

Need your help regarding the EMOTIVA XPA1 MONO BLOCKS. I recall you were using them. Just had an incident in NYC some flickering and a momentary drop in voltage. The amps were being 'protected' by a hospital grade surge protector by TRIP LITE
Although the amp shut down with the neutral white light, When I tried to restart them they turned over only once and will not get warm. They are dead sound wise.(One stream of red dots and the blue light goes on) It needs to turner 3x for it to work. Is the any chance that this is a fuse problem and the amps can be saved? This happened one amp many years ago.Thanks...
Ut
I had Emotiva 1L mono blocks trying to drive my Maggie 1.7 and the Amps kept blowing, they made multiple return trips to the factory for repair I just don't think they have produce enough amps to drive Maggie's. Later went to a Parasound integrated which worked great.

I powered both MMGs and 1.7s with Emotiva UPA-1 mono's over 10 yrs. I bought them at the end of their production run, got the pair to my door for $598. They did a credible job of powering the maggies, especially for the price. I never had a lick of trouble with them and they were pushed hard at times.
My preamp is about 20 yrs old so I opened it up to see if any caps were swelled or leaking, thankfully they were not. I decided to check the UPA-1s as well, almost all the caps were swelled and at least half of those were leaking. I was a disappointed but I got a solid 10 yrs usage out of them and for the price paid I knew they were not going to built like a Bryston.
I also put together a system for my sister based on an Emo stereo amp (200w a side, don't remember the model number) that was also purchased on sale at the end of a model run, it has had no problems over about 7 or 8 years.
I have read of others having issues with Emotiva equipment, thankfully I never did.
That's never happened to me regarding the shut down.
Have you called Emotiva? I called them before some time back and they were pretty helpful.
I remembered I left my UPA-1's on for about a week and their 'blue dial lights' went blinking amber, I looked it up on google and someone mentioned that happens due to voltage leakage (or something like that, it's been years).
If you're on facebook there's a Emotiva forum with a couple thousand members. You might want to run this by them-
good luck.
Thanks for your good wishes and suggestions. Fortunately, the other equipment as far as I can tell survives the voltage drop and urge. Maybe that speaks of the original poor design of the EMOTIVA XPA1 and ther indifference of the service group made me furious. Have figure out my options if the fuse repair does not work. Just at an eye op so this comes atg a poor time(restrictions on bending and lifting) Cannot believe that material stuff can affect me mentally. So it will be awhile before I can enter the spirit of the hobby- Music has been the antidote of most the shit that we all have to deal

Yes I called them. They were not interested in repairs ; they no longer service the XPA 1...Although they claim it is not a fuse issue I will go along that rout- They make getting into the under panel very hard with many screws to unscrew.Generally I have had good luck with my electrics , at various brands and prices but not with these.
Price for amplifiers for Maggies are now daunting and may have move down the hobby ladder to my chagrin My M2 Yamaha , although powerful cannot drive the Maggies. Very disheartened by it all.
USaudiomart has several UPA-1'S under $400; your looking at about 400w / 4ohm.I was looking at their Krells and there are several South of $2K but those are the 200w and less group. Anything higher in wattage gets up in the high $2K and up.
Class D's give you a lot of bang for the buck; I bought a pair of Bel Canto M300 mono blocks a few years back for $1100. They pushed my Apogee Duettas quite splendidly.
But it'll most likely be cheaper getting your XPA-1 running. I went on yelp last week and found a guy locally that did a complete overhaul on my vintage Marantz 2238; new dial bulbs, clean the pots and circuit board for $130. He was going to place new capacitors in there as well but he said they'd already been replaced.
Granted these monster Emotivas are a different beast entirely but I'm sure there's folks out there that will service them.
I would look into posing your issue on the fb forum if only to see if others have ran into that issue and possible resolutions.
good luck!

Sorry, but it's probably not a fuse. I would get in touch with Emotiva Service and see what they have to say.
In my experience a "brown out", (drop in voltage) can be just as bad as a sharp spike...well except for a lightning strike.
You might try to unplug them completely overnight to see if they might "reset". It's a long shot, but you never know...
Unfortunately you are right; Lower East side NYC experienced a large voltage drop at 8;25Pm, subway failure followed by a power surge 40 minutes later. Oddly my other electronics for the moment, as well as computer TV do not seem to be affected. They could not repair it and do not think it is a fuse issue.
Any suggestion for amps to power a a Magnepan 1.7----at modest cost.
Thanks Ut
For a LOT of power? A last-model Parasound A21 This is like 250x2 and 400x2@4ohms.
Plenty of power
My power condieitonwer? Will shut off all its outlets if voltage drops below 95vac or goes above 135vac.......
Best of luck getting EMO to part with a Schematic. And they probably do NOT fix them any more either, since it would cost them about 500$ to stock the most common failure mode parts and circuit boards.
Too much is never enough
Hi Pictureguy; You are right about Emotiva-for a while they cannibalized returned stock No schematic no parts -as you guessed a second rate co. Others on the asylum have found that the amps work for them.
In NYC, you cannot file a claim against Con Ed-they have some deal with city;highest rates in the US and they are not liable for anything but food and medicine in black outs. Filed anyways so I can take it to small claim if the courts ever open with a2 year back log.
Feel like a crazy man throwing big$ for amps that cannot be protected except expensive insurance policies-exclusions galore because of the Manhattan grid
Do not think 400w is sufficient for the 1.7 with organ music that really pushes the bottom
Might file a claim with TRIPP LITE in which i have send them surge protectors and they decide if it was a voltage drop or surge-obviouly it was both.. They are supposed to protect against $75,000 damage Hee Haw..
1,7 won't go 'to the bottom'. Some (VERY FEW) tunes call for a 15hz pedal tone.
I cross my 1.6s in 2 places. LOW cut to the mains maybe 50 to 55hz. Sub gets full-range signal but has a 24db / octave crossover I set to 40 to 45 hz.... The 'gap'fills itself in without bloat or boom.
I DO listen to some organ music and attend the Sprekels Organ concerts a couple times a year....down in Balboa Park San Diego, which I THINK is the last place on the planet which has a regular perfoance of such an inssttruemtn..
This might be the 3rd or 4th keyboard for this instrument. STAY after the Sunday Concert and take the TOUR behind the scenes.
SDGE paid for the repair of my amplifier BUT I had to tell them EXACTLY when and what I observed.
Too much is never enough
Happy with my Class A/B Cary CAD-200.
Drives the LRS well with a balanced sound. Rated 200/350WPC at 8/4 ohms. You can get a used one for less than a grand.

I am quite happily driving 1.7's with a VTV Purifi amp, with VTV buffer and Sonic Imagery 990 op-amp at $1640.00 400 watts into 4 ohms, super low distortion. This amp is clean, powerful and handles crescendos very well. No hints of anything untoward. The amp, as Maggies will as well, let you know all about the quality of the recording you are feeding it. Highly recommended.
I have not heard this amp, but a few people who's opinions I trust, say it's a wonderful amp.LOTS of power and only weighs like 5 pounds.
Also, Magnepan actually intended the LRS to be hopefully purchased by the Wilson/Magico/etc. owners to get a taste of the Magnepan sound. They were hoping that it would lead to sales of the 3.7i/20.7/30.7 models.
So, the LRS isn't really any easier to drive than the others. Well, it wasn't Magnepan's intent anyway...

HAVE TO UNSCREW 12 TINY PHILLIPS TO UNLOCK THE PLATE THAT HAS THE FUSAt 80 pounds a shot going back and forth they have not a shot going to Emotiva. Did twice already- I give up if it is not the fuses...
There goes 5 grand in replacement.. Did not even last 8 years after numerous repairs...Others have had good luck with them..
Here are mine. I use (2) Velodyne DLS-3500R subs. Really fast and tight 8" subs.
I was flabbergasted at how good these are. I was a Magnepan dealer for many years and have personally owned almost every model that Magnepan has made. These are amazing!
My reference speakers are: Acoustat 2+2, (fully modernized, updated and extremely nice), Magnepan 3.7i and Martin Logan CLSIIA. I have no desire to go back to any of them right now. I'm sure I will, but the LRS are simply musically involving to a great degree...
Are you suggesting: It might pay to buy the LRS you are saying which accommodates a less powerful amp?
The 1.7's are extraordinary in many ways but only with powerful amps---but I cannot handle big heavy amps.. I am 80, strong but now that strong..
Your room will be fine I have 3.7i in a 12 by 15 room.
I would suggest starting with a pair of 1.7.i with a sub in that room. ( That was my first pair)
Just make sure you have a good amp 6to drive them with.
Happy listening.

is some unevenness in the bass, but it's not a dealbreaker issue.

Ok thanks guys. Two final questions. First, will the LRS outperform all the similar in price used models such as the MG12? Second, will having only one subwoofer suffice, or should I purchase a pair?
The collective advice seems to be if you can afford a maggie (used or new) with true ribbon tweeter go for it as long as the speakers were well cared for. Else go with the best new Quasi ribbon that you can afford with a sub (for those that need full extension) starting with LRS, then to .7...
I have one 15 in. Rythmic sealed sub. For my set up with the LRS I roll the input to the LRS amp off at 70Hz with a passive filter and set the sub crossover at 80 Hz. With some good positioning and experimenting with gain. The sub integration is pretty seamless.

I can't speak to the performance of one versus the other -
On the subwoofer - start with one, and listen
it should be / could be enough - however if you need a second, then get that once you are certain-
Happy Listening
I think you will like the LRS. Give them some time to break in, and you
will like them even more. You may also want to get some aftermarket stands
for them, and for sure get some better jumpers (the steel ones Magnepan
furnishes are crap). Anticables makes good jumpers for reasonable price.

Agreed. The length to the side wall shouldn't be a problem. How far apart can you get them?
Tweeters "in" for sure with a semi-aggressive toe-in depending on how far apart they are and how far away you sit from them.
I can get them a little over 6 feet away from each other and I'd be listening to them from about 9 feet away.
I'd go tweeters in with a steep toe in to start.

Magnepans are pretty much unaffected by the side walls. Go for it.
