Most likely a different crossover capacitor vendor.
A more detailed explanation is here .....
The elusive 'i' ???

Follow Ups:
Not that it would matter that much but I would ask myself was this done because the caps are superior to the original caps, or was it because the original caps are no longer available and Magnepan had to go with these at a higher price point (thus the justification in price hike).

Right at about the same time the "i" revision happened, RTI, the vendor of the white cap used in the original 1.7 was sold to what ultimately was Electrocube. It was most likely a situation where Electrocube with their broadened capability after the acquisition was able to demonstrate a USA made, technically superior cap at a similar price point as an alternative to the True Caps that were used in the original x.7 models that appear to have been replaced with OEM Electrocube caps in the "i" revision.

again sounds VERY plausible, at the 1.7 level Magnepan could have easily bumped the price up another $150 (I think that's the difference between the 1.7-1.7i) and simply said: 'cost of inflation/materials' and hardly anyone would have batted an eye.But things get kind of interesting when you jump into the 3, 20, series; those caps tend to be a bit pricey - (assuming of course their caps were even changed). Would be very hard to explain a significant spike in a MSRP without a reasonable justification.
Most of that talk went away eventually once the LRS came out and stole the show.
