Not completely without the TV. I had the opportunity when I swapped out the old TV, but I had a friend helping so I couldn't take time for listening while the space was empty.
I had the 58" plasma 2ft from the front wall and moved it toward me a so it was 4ft from the front wall, and had it that way during the couple years of Rooze evolution ... which also involved repositioning speakers +/- 2ft.
Being very familiar with that sound, with the larger TV pulled even further toward me (5ft from front wall) such that most of the rear wave goes behind it ... resulted in a definite change for the better.

Follow Ups:
Since it looks like you're willing to experiment with room treatment I wonder what the difference would be if there was absorbing at the rear of the TV versus diffusion? My remodel project is on hold or I'd try it myself.
I originally had absorption on the whole front wall and the sides 12ft toward the listening position ... and the ceiling! So that was my extreme experiment. It was 3" Sonex and absorbed above 500Hz.I realized it was too dead and started putting diffusion on the front and side walls, and pulled down the Sonex from the ceiling up to just in front of the speakers. This was with speakers in the conventional front firing position.
The more diffusion I added, the better it sounded. I needed absorption on the sides and ceiling at the first reflection points because the room is kind of narrow ~ 12 1/2ft.
So diffusion is most definitely better than absorption on the front wall and sides up to the speaker position. Diffusion is also good on the back wall as long as it's at least 6ft from the MLP. I also like diffusion immediately left and right of the MLP.
