Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

As most of the regular here know, I sold my 3.7i because of a downsize to a condo. My listening room, which was close to audio nirvana went from about 20x23 to 12x17. In any case, I have been using an old pair of Insignia speakers from Best Buy that I got for under $50. The speakers are sitting on the floor and the room treatments are gone. Same electronics and Rel Strata III. I am surviving ok but guess what - it ain't the same. In case anyone is wondering, I am debating whether to go with LRS vs 0.7 but that's another story.
So to the point. With the recent discussions of measuring Maggies, I decided to take a look at my setup. To my surprise the FS were quite nice. The sub LP was set to 78 Hz (2nd order) and the mains run full range.
The point being measurements are just data and by themselves are not very useful. It is the interpretation of the data that matters. Despite the nice curves, there is no way in hell that the current system sounds like the 3.7i.
I married the perfect woman - the downside is that everything that goes wrong is my fault.

A timely post for me indeed. I was in the process of choosing between the 3.7i & the 20.7 Life showed up and the home I lease jumped in price and a much nicer home became available so moving was the smart decision. The new home has an existing (was AV) space that would become my dedicated new audio room. 13x17 with 9 foot ceiling. To make a short story long, I decided to wait until I listened to the 1.7s in this space and I am glad I did. They seem to be perfect in every way. IMHO a 12x16 or 13x17 room is ideal for the 1.7s and its probably the right spot between the choice of .7 or 3.7i
As to the other point, I have never found a box of any variety that gives me the same listening experience, Detail, Cohesion, Resolution and full on nirvana feeling that comes with Magnepan. Cheers.

I too have Maggie 3.7i in a 12 x 15 room and they sound great, previously had 1.7 in the same space. I would go with the larger size .7, if you have a sub too you'll probably be satisfied.
You're not as bad off as a friend whose wife won't let him upgrade from Bose 901 series 3 speakers.

I think your room would support some 1.6s.....
Ever considered a 'pre loved' pair for not much more than the LRS?
Too much is never enough
You are probably correct, but the boss has decreed that the speakers be as small as possible. I was able to convince her to go with the 0.7 but the 1.7 would be out of the question.

Man, what's wrong with you guy's? "not allowed", "the boss has decreed"? and all that kind of crap.
Who usually works the most? who usually makes most of the money?........THE MAN! and then when you want to reward yourself for all that hard work with a nice speaker you get whistled back because it doesn't fit in with some "artsy fartsy" home deco shit..........just buy the damn speakers, don't ask first, just tell them, they can pick the washing machine + dryer.
This topic comes up every few months - "you guys have no cojones", etc.
Simply put it comes down to do you want to make your wife happy or yourself. In my case, if my wife isn't happy then I am not happy. And in fact, there is no boss - I was just using a little hyperbole.
Question: How long have you been happily married?B
BTW, I don't generally consume alcohol beyond an occasional beer or wine. OTOH, I make my wife a vodka martini almost every night. Lately she is into Buffalo Grass vodka.

LOL, are you kidding? Married? I challenge anyone to give me one sane reason why anybody would want to get married, the only time marriage made sense was back in the "Stone Age" when uneducated women were stuck at home giving birth to a dozen or so kids while daddy had to work all day, it's just a kind of insurance policy that says"don't you dare leave me now I'm old and fat or I'll take your Maggies and your money!"
You may have guessed by now, I'm not married, for the last 36 I've been living with the same woman, and together we have a 20 year old daughter. For me, if the relationship is good for both, that's great, if it isn't, then it's time to move on, married or not. Marriage is not a commitment, it's just an excuse to throw a party, having children together, now thats a lifetime commitment.
Before I can make someone else happy, I need to be happy myself, so, putting the Maggies I want in the living room will eventually make everybody happy!
Agreed. If you are allowed big speakers they are going into the basement 'man cave'.
The only thing she should bring to the table in considering new equipment is a MARTINI!
I'm can post that because she'll never see it. LOL!
That's the way! Now grab a few martinis and show her who's wearing the pants.......LOL!
AFTER a SUCCESSFUL Audition?
Would the spouse go for some 1.6s at a potential trade-up cost of much LESS than the LRS new?
Full disclosure would mean maybe +300$ cost V the new LRS.......
I'm in a similar boat. But I made it clear when we got married (pre 1990!) that my panels would stay
FOREVER.
Too much is never enough
@ neolith,
you did not even try to get the 3.7i in your new room? My room is 13.5x17 and fits my 3.6 perfectly. Of course, they dominate my room but I got my wife's approval 10 years ago.
"It is the interpretation of the data that matters." Fully agree on that! For dipole speakers it is really tricky to measure them.
The major consideration was WAF. Unlike you, I got disapproval of Magnepans 38 years ago! This time around I was given a choice of what could go in the room: 3.7i or me but not both :).

Thanks for posting this -
Sorry that the current set-up is not meeting your needs -
You raise an interesting point - in that the measurements are not everything.
Ironically Most of us do not have the tools to measure what we have in the room we have it in-
Yet the measurements sections of the review are becoming the standard by which products are lauded or dammed.
The response of a speaker will greatly depend upon the room, unless the speaker is being measured within ~6" of the transducer-
Hardly how we listen to music-
And the room effects are quite significant....
Happy Listening
It's pointless trying to measure a flat panel 5' high, 6" away from it?
You need to put the measurement mic at your listening position.
So, yes - the effect of the room needs to be understood.
