Undeniably Magnepan is having a great run these past 18 months or so with the LRS and the peek-a-boo 30.7 / condo combo and doesn't appear to be slowing down much either. Regarding the 30.7 I say 'peek-a-boo' because they're often brought up bur rarely seen...doesn't really matter, both made Magnepan the talk of the audio town by grabbing audio mags covers and websites every month.
Wendell is either a marketing genius or one of the luckiest guys in world- both rightfully so -his unconventional 'road show' seems to have paid off in a huge way.
Which brings us to the 1.7i. I owned a pair of 1.7 (not 'i') briefly after a broken wing pair (bad bass panel after he supposedly tried to perform a XO upgrade) showed up locally dirt cheap. I figured the owner was unfamiliar enough with Maggies to fix it and it would be a quick and easy fix for me. Well turns out it wasn't as easy (nor obvious) as I initially thought and gave up on them after a week or two ultimately selling them what I paid for them.
Anyway my point being the 1.7i hasn't gotten much attention due to the enormous success of the LRS which is essentially a scaled down version of the 1.7i. With the 1.7i you get everything the LRS offers at a greater, larger scale including bass, sound stage and presentation. The trade off being the LRS is absolutely perfect for smaller rooms and are inexpensive enough to budget a decent power amp (or tube amp) whereas the 1.7i can easily dominate a small room, and the price of admission to get them in 4th gear can be substantial amp-wise.
Having once owned the LRS (bought them out of curiosity) I can say the hype is well warranted and the urge to upgrade to the 1.7i always lingered in the back of mind- which I guess is Magnepan's marketing strategy all along. Not to mention a great investment, I sold them slightly over list price.
Follow Ups:
One thing that some folks don't understand about planets in general is larger models don't need as much power.
While the LRS is likely wonderful, I'd rather wait for the 1.7 if I was considering either.
agree somewhat ; having lived with the TRT for so long, with that amount of cash for the 1.7i I'd be leanin' more towards a 3.5 or even a 3.6. but that's just me : )
I totally agree with you,I have 1.7i's and 3.6r's. I already had the 1.7i but got a great deal for a pr of 3.6r's. I was really happy with the 1.7 and I would hear the chatter about the 3.6's so I bought them. That was the worst thing I could have done, once you hear that ribbon tweeter and a little more bass I was hooked, bass is enough that I only turn the subs on for certain types of music. That Ribbon Tweeter is a game changer...So word of advice for Future Maggie Owners,if your unsure on price or room considerations or maybe amplifier needs,Dont listen to a Maggie with a ribbon tweeter.
I agree, bought a pair of 3.5r for a really great price 10 years ago. They are are great value, for the money, hard to beat. I specifically wanted a Maggie with ribbon driver. As you said, once you experience it...
~ I think ~ that Magnepan ribbons "have to" be considered among the best tweeters / drivers that are available.
I would like to try or buy a pair of 3.6r or 3.7r, struggle spending more, as they .are not. my primary speaker... I use them in rotation.
the other model that I think is an alternative to the newer 1.6, 1.7 is the old 2.5R version. A 2 way with the ribbon tweeter going down fairly low into the midrange. I heard one once at a dealer and if it wasn't for the hype of the 3 series I would have bought one.
6-foot models. Many of us, some for quite some time, have been wishing for a 5-foot model with a true ribbon tweeter, and there has been a fair bit of discussion about such on this and other forums. The company hasn't shown any evidence of interest in this idea.
