I am planning to razor my MG1's. After some searching, it would seem that the original damping material described in the post is not available (Cascade, black). Also, there are a lot of different thicknesses among the brands that are available. Does anyone know the best thickness to use, and of any brands with black foil backing that are currently available? Thanks! -Wayne

Wouldn't is be better to mask the holes and add an "undercoating" roll or spray on coating to the non perforated part of the panel..

I answered over on the General forum, but thought I would repeat here.
I razored my Maggies back in 2011 I think, and used:
Cascade Audio Engineering VMAX Damping Pads which have a thickness of 0.060".

You will probably have to invest in a few black broad-tip sharpies.
I think this is what you are looking for;
* any constrained layer damping sheet can be used, such as Dynamat Extreme, Roadkill, Dampliner, etc. Cascade V-MAXMP aluminum damping sheets was chosen because it is black so it blends into the stock frame and driver, and it is easy to work with. Looks like the link to Parts Express did not copy through.
I've got most of the 10 sq. ft. of black FatMat left over from 'razoring' my MMG's a couple of years ago, if you want a budget solution. Bought it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G8I4D2Y
Happy to send it your way for $10 and postage.
Care to comment on your impressions before and after the mod ?
Did this several months after acquiring the MMG's, at the same time I did some delamination repair work. I am the second owner, they are ~ 2005 vintage.
No dramatic difference, to be sure... may have helped the focus a bit. Have to admit it may have been difficult to notice as I was so thrilled to be rid of the annoying occasional buzz. Should also note I didn't do the full 'razor' treatment, just the front face of the speaker.
Still waiting for some kind of measurements before and after. That goes for not only razoring but also for hardwood frames. Alumiminum hollow profiles filled with blasting sand shows a clear improvement over MDF.
What did the measurements show with the sand filled aluminum frames ?
This is what Ronnhedh presented (hope he won't mind, pictures are not visable in the original thread anymore):Increased efficiency in the low-mid-range is obtained with a stiffer frame
This measurement shows in-room farfield magnitude vs frequency with blue-left speaker before and red-right speaker after re-makeover.
He also did accelerometer measurement of the frame.

How much of that is speaker and mic placement deltas from one measurement to the next ?
Also, comparing a left speaker to a right speaker in the same spot still moves the bass panel left or right changing the room nodes.
I have found placement of both mic and speaker as well as toe in can change the measurements considerably.
