This thread goes along with the Danny Ritchie vs the Magnepan.Does anyone have a schematic for the 1.7i?
Or the difference in cross over compared to the 1.7
I did DR RP-600 x-over upgrade and it was a vast improvement to me. I am a noob in the x-over world.
I own a pair of 1.7i's and would consider the upgrade based on my results with the 600's. I emailed Danny and his reply was that he was unfamiliar with the difference between the 2 and was reluctant to say one would work for both.
Thanks
Paul

I posted the 1.7 schematic on the audiocircle jerk forum quite a few years ago.

That schematic is correct. I didn't have 1.7's at the time, but I do now and have confirmed it.
For those interested in defeating the supertweeter modification it's pretty easy to do. Just clip one leg of the 10uF capacitor.
The impedance drop at high frequencies will no longer be there and it won't drop below 4.8 ohms. The tweeter is in the 1.6 configuration then.
Dave.
Dave, What was the before and after difference from removing the 10uF cap from the circuit? Was there a perceivable change in brightness, soundstaging, etc?
-Joe
They're not that big!
Yeah, there's a noticeable change. I find the speaker too bright on top normally and use a 1.5 ohm resistor in the tweeter circuit.
With the capacitor removed I find it takes away a bit of the sizzle, but the resistor is still necessary.
YMMV.
Dave.
Davey, Thank you.
But I still could only assume this was applicable to the i's.
Understand I am leaning on the knowledge of others, as I am a noob but capable of following directions (sometimes!)
If one peeled the skirt up on the i's would that tell others of knowledge more?
Are you dissatisfied with the sound of your 1.7i's??
Dave.
Davey, No. Quite happy.
But if it improves on something already good then why not :)
I'm a man of constant tinkering.
Nothing wrong with tinkering, but a guy like Danny Richie would not be tinkering with any of my speakers. :)
Dave.
But here again, a noob like myself, and the improvement DR did on my 600's I have respect.
I'm open to upgraded parts.
Davey why would one would want to modified the 1.7 super tweeter to revert back to 1.6 status? Curious! Thanks, Sam
I don't consider it a super-tweeter because it doesn't extend any higher than it already would. It only changes the polar response of the speaker at the top end because the tweeter is now 1/4 the width.
But, the main reason people might consider switching back to the "normal" configuration is the impedance drop at the top end. It drops down to 1.3 ohms. If you disable it, the impedance is 4.8 ohms minimum.
Much would depend upon the power amplifier used though. Some might not have any issue with that impedance load.
I'm not advocating one way or the other. Just mentioning that's very easy to reconfigure it.
Dave.
My understanding is that the difference between the 1.7 & 1.7i is not in the XO.
I have not seen a 'real' XO schematic posted here for the 1.7/1.7i; several years ago someone posted what they thought was the XO ... but it didn't work when I put it into lspCAD - so I believe they must've written it down, wrongly.
Andy
What is the difference between the 2? All I have heard was I was and stood for improved!
