What I suggested about adding weight will let the OP know if thats a direction he wants to go before doing the woodwork and than not be happy with the difference. Besides everybody with Maggies are not mechanically skilled or able.
Follow Ups:
Yes, building a frame is a daunting project. No question.
Not only do you need at least a minimal toolset, including a decent table saw, but ability to use it well.
I don't have the tools but make up for lack of immediate skill by TEST. I try different things on what you may call 'scrap' until I get what I want then DO it. I built a 30 cubic foot box for all my BBQ stuff by this method as well as a nice workbench. The lid for the BBQ box is fully overlapped and will NOT admit water. I used ADA compliant offset hinges. I even put a tilt to the lid to shed water.
I'm confident that given a table saw, I could build a good reframe with all the features I have designed.
I'm even NOT going to do what Peter Gunn did and put screws thru the panel to the frame. Instead, I'll use a clampng system and float the panel in the frame.
\Drawing is of a clamp I was thinking about but put on the Reject Pile.
Too much is never enough
I like your idea a lot...but you have to measure the potential upside(Never heard Grant's stands) against the 'chance of injuring the speakers" as remote as it is. As for the base itself you can use all kinds of exotic materials but 3 coats acrylic paint on ply board can be beautiful. I think the upside is worth it. So go for it!
Drivers are nearly the last thing to be installed.
Of course, care must be taken and most importantly.....work from a plan wo you don't have to improvise much or at all.
A pair of frames can be made from a Single 4' X 6' (yes....SIX) sheet of plyboo in 3/4" thickness.
I didn't show all my 'ideas' for this, but plenty of detail to go. Penal not attached to base in the conventional manner, for example.
And sure, FINISH is quite important. Original base pieces for my MG-1 was a simple piece of MDF which was painted flat black by Magnepan.
Too much is never enough
If you are up to it please post your progress,,
