Wendell asked me to post this --
Dear Inmates,
One of my motivations for the Cynthia dinner with 4 Inmates was a PR effort on behalf of all audiophiles. It was not scripted and it could have gone badly. I knew Josh, but not the other 3 gentlemen. The dinner started off rather awkward since they did not know each other. What you saw was after everyone relaxed.
Many viewers do not understand the purpose of the video---audiophiles are basically normal (likeable) people that have a passion for music and accurate reproduction. In my opinion, the video was a huge success. (In addition,, despite the age and gender difference, they found they had a lot in common with Cynthia.) The 4 Inmates would like to do it again next year and others want to attend.
All my career, I have been exhorting dealers to maintain good relationships with their hardcore audiophile customers. (Don't let a few "bad eggs" sour your attitude.) When dealers are "venting" in private, there are two common stories they like to tell--- super-rich customers that make unreasonable demands and hard core audiophiles. You all know the profile of the unhappy audiophile and I don't need to recount the dealer's complaints.
During my 30.7 tour, I asked who was active in the chat rooms? It turns out that a lot of people "lurk", but it was rare to find anyone that was active. The Planar Asylum is the most popular forum for those interested in ribbon and electrostatic speakers. There is a HUGE audience watching you---many of them new to high-end audio.
You have the option to remain anonymous and say whatever you want in this forum. But, we individually contribute to a negative or positive image of audiophiles. The "good guys" are in the majority and should set the tone for this forum.
Follow Ups:
My experience has been that there are jerks in every hobby, this is no different. Also, I think the term "audiophile" has gotten such a bad rap that these days very few folks are comfortable being referred to as such without having an explanation attached.Being into high end audio is very much like being into high performance sports cars. Either you "get it" and you're totally into it or you don't understand it at all. Most folks are going to be in the latter "car is just a car" category, never understanding the dedication some folks have for it. Also, given the costs of maintaining high end gear to achieve best performance, anything which screams "grey poupon" automatically turns off folks who see it as a crazy indulgence supported by a wealthy bunch of old farts with lots of money to throw around.
Yes, these are unfair stereotypes (pun intended). What the video does is provide a good starting point for a broader gathering of planar enthusiasts of both genders who have developed an appreciation of and passion for high performance home audio.
Allow me to add, Magnepan appears well positioned as a possible motivational leader by offering lines starting with relatively inexpensive entry level performance speakers to the grander 30 series, all designed for value at their respective price points. This is the kind of thing which invites broader participation, IMO.
The video was a great idea which holds promise for future gatherings of like minded audio enthusiasts willing to participate on camera.
Music can either be foreground or background. For those of us with audiophile blood coarsing through our veins I'm persuaded that we prefer our music front and center with as little of the world getting between it as humanly possible.
Cheers,
AuPh
