Finally got around to hooking this internal passive XO up (the bass panel's driven directly with an active XO). I'm sure it'll take a few hundred hours to break in and will need some rewire & other tweaking. Too early to tell, but it sounds pretty good after only 10 hours. Bass has a little more needed impact with the heavier wiring. Mid-range and highs are cleaner but haven't quite got the body, bloom, and airiness as before - the sound hasn't opened up yet. For those that have no intention of doing this know that as cheap as the OEM parts are, they really don't sound bad at all once broken in. They do have a little fuzziness by comparison, that at best, may add some texture and at worst a very fine grain. The outboad XO is another matter entirely.
Critical in-series caps & inductors are Duelund Cast. Erse inductor & V-cap OIMPs are in the parallel positions. All are 12 guage. Wire is Neotech 6/9s (a real PITA to work with) connected to Vampire solid copper BPHEX/CB. Wood oak box by Carolina Wood Designs and it matches the speakers and fits neatly in the space in the Mye stand.

and I'm sure does and will sound even better. Nice job, great fit.
:)
Are those big round black things Duelund caps? Huge! :-))
You said " the bass panels are driven directly with an active XO ". I presume you mean you have replaced the external passive XO boxes with a 2-way active XO ... which feeds the bass panel amp as well as providing a mid HP signal to the mid/ribbon amp driving those internal XOs?

"Andyr", I think he chose to scratch his left ear with his right hand.
The big one is the cap. The two smaller ones to the right one on its side are the cast inductors. Right about the setup. One amp drives the tweet/kids another the bass panel. There's a 3rd that drives the subwoofers.
After 15 hrs the systems opening up. Theres a purity to the sound that wasn't there before - less "mist" and a bit of dryness is gone. I was afraid that the different dcr of the inductors might change the blending of the drivers but that doesn't seem to be the case. Whether it's as good as your 3way active I'll never know but I think it's going to sound pretty good.
Regards Barry
I wouldn't be surprised if it took a couple of hundred hours to reach its peak. :-))
And re. " Whether it's as good as your 3way active ..." I suspect that going 3-way active only adds a small improvement over 2-way active plus a fine internal XO rebuild like you've done. So I'm dead sure it's going to sound pretty good! :-))
What I've found does give a big improvement, with my Frankenpans, is having the mid on a separate sheet of mylar to the bass panel, so you can physically separate the bass frame from the mid/ribbon frame.

Andy
Nice looking box, especially when compared to the gaudy, ugly ones built by the member where who was recently banned.
So this comment is based upon all the crossover boxes that peter gunn has built and you have seen. Pretty amazing as all the people I have talked with that have the mod are pretty impressed with the craftmanship and unique properties of the boxes they get (myself included). I work with wood as a hobby and his work is first rate. If you don't like the designs, then by all means, don't look. To bash the work without first hand knowledge is petty
I think PG's work is outstanding and wanted him to build me a pair of boxes last Fall. He was too busy. As you can see, Mike does great work, the quality was excellent, really great communication and his price was a little less than PG's although he mentioned it took him more time than he expected.
Here's his website in case you want a humidor, cutting board, or furniture.

Hey Barry, I appreciate the link. I am definately a wood guy. I suspect I will be ordering from their site in the near future. I am a sucker for wood craftsmanship (I dabble as a hobby). Always great to find another source.
Sorry your order didn't work out with PG, I have nothing but respect for him and his work. The work he did for me was first rate and I have no regrets.
I suspect that Mike has the same work ethic and will be contacting him soon.
Dang, you must have spent more on the xo's than you did on the speakers. Looks nice and I wish you the best but for all that money I would spring for another $10 and get 10 uH chokes for the tweeters and the woofer.

Neolith, Thanks as always. I'm a fan and read your posts because I am bound to learn something worthwhile. While this passive XO seems expensive and is, active quad amping (!!!) based on my other equipment would have been a whole lot more. I really think this will be personally satisfying once broken in. That last little bit of hash from the caps is now gone. I got a really good discount on the parts which helped. I'll see if I can scrape up another $10 for the chokes. Have considered them but don't live in a high RF area.
Kindest regards, Barry

RFI is all around even in less populated areas -- cell phones, satellite TV, AM radio, GPS, wireless computers, and that radio transmitter the CIA implanted in one of my fillings so they could monitor my thoughts.
