Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
99.44.248.131
Hi,
I am a long time reader of the asylum and have posted infrequently, mostly in the amp/pre and tube asylum's under this moniker. Finally joined today.
I have become very interested in maggie's of late and ordered a pair of MMG from the factory last week. I hope to get a sense of the Maggie sound. I've read many of the threads here and on Audio Circle. My sense is I may want to move up the line after hearing the MMG's or I may find them the bargain of bargains and settle in with them.
Given that I have Quad 57's, Harbeth and Cain & Cain speakers, how might the MMG or other Maggie's compare. I have never heard Maggie's. My room is odd - a dining room about 12 by 14 that opens into the living room adding another 15 feet. I often listen from a couch in the living room with the speakers firing directly at me perhaps 18 or 20 feet away(hardly ideal).
Thanks,
BenE

With the MMG’s (all Maggies), I found that it takes them 200 hrs of break in to come into their own. Fresh out of the box, I’ve found them to be horrible. My favorite speakers were Mag 3.6’s, but I sold them because they were too BIG for my current condo/apt. because of that I have the MMG’s. If, I had the room, only then would I consider the new 1.7’s or 3.6’s. In the meantime, I love the MMG’s and I’m not deprived.
(One reporters opinion – IMHO - “me, myself and I”) previous speakers I’ve owned were Mag 3.6’s, Vienna Acoustics’, Merlins, Sonus Faber Guarneri’s and Silverline Audio’s. In closing, these little MMG’s (regardless of money) are so satisfying, so good, and so right (for my small oddly sized space) that my search for speakers is over. In fact, if I were smart I’d just modify/peter gunn the MMG’s and call it a day. I hope you enjoy the MMG’s and that they work well in your space!
Thank you. I will hace them soon and will report back.
Hi BenE,
i have MMGs, and have modded them a little. I am really not good with wood work or soldering, but with just a little work on the crossovers and the frame, i have now music that i could live with forever.
My previous speakers were Celestion SL700s, as well as Vienna Acoustics Haydn. The maggies are the most musical. I have tried changing components, new amps, new cables and cd players and DAC, but the constant is the MMG. I have a small room, and the MMGs fill the room, so i am not interested in bigger maggies. Should my maggies give up the ghost one day, i would probably still get another pair. Yes for playing music they are that good.
Warmfires.

It can all go many different ways depending on your preferences, the acoustic environment, the equipment and, ultimately, you willingness to mod/tweak the MMGs.
At the stage I am with my modded MMGs, I can live with them for a good while until I can afford 3.7s and a larger room for them. If you consider that I regularly listen to and/or have listened to far more costly speakers, with far "better" hardware, than mine, it may be encouraging for you to know that none of them make me feel envious. Well, yes, one...but it is another Maggie...
So, there are good futures ahead with the Maggies, and the MMGs can be one excellent way to get started.
Thanks for the reply(s) everyone.
jBEN does your post mean that for you 3.7 is the next significant step up in the line from the MMG?
Yes, though I have to qualify this. I have been very lucky. The mods to my MMGs, relative to this room, and thanks to the help from people here, have yielded a high performing system, given its modest cost. To be sure, the ability to measure in-room response has been key in tuning things properly.
The net result is that at its very top end, these MMGs tweeters are just shy of ribbon tweeters. At the other end, their low frequency is so good that I can live without turning on the subwoofer for most music. They are fairly dynamic, as these things go, and manage to "hit" me with some upper bass passages and even shake my sofa a little with the lower notes. Imaging-wise, I pinch myself all the time. As a total system, it is very enjoyable...and this is with MMGs that I bought used but that were built over a decade ago. Again, I am lucky that our gang here helped me along.
The only speaker that I've heard do these things as good as, or far better is the 3.7. Keep in mind that this has always been in demo rooms and with different power amps each time. I have yet to hear them in a room fully optimized for them. So, the full potential of 3.7s must be awesome...even well before I get the itch to mod them (a genetic defect of mine).
Great as the 1.7s are, no matter what I did, I would still be short of the ribbon tweeter performance. So, I am skipping them and waiting for the time when I can afford the 3.7s.
Now, if in the meantime I found a very cheap set of 1.7s to modify them, I'd be tempted...even though this is still largely uncharted territory. : - ))
I gather some folks really love the ribbon tweeter. I'd love to hear it. My speakers are fairly polite, as it goes, up top. The Harbeth's can do a bit of bass and if I feel the need my REL B3 can help. With Cain's that REL was essential, at least in my room.
Really can't wait to hear the MMG's.
Thanks
The MMG's will be nice after broken in, but probably not likely to be superior to what you have now. Vs harbeth you'll find them bass deficient and Quad's will be clearer in midrange.
The 3-series is a different story, if you have the space.
Do you think you need to move to a 3.6 or 3.7 to 'challenge' the Quads or Herbeth's? I've heard that the 1.7 are very 'of one voice'.
Thanks
I think you well like the sound....there like the 57s... there flat..FOR the $$$ hard to beat... in the near-filed thay should work great...I like an own the older type Magnepans with the pole-peace in the front ..all the new ones like the MMgs are in the back...Lot of info here on the MMgs....I have owned the Quad 57s....I have found Know one speaker can do all thing.....But the Maggys are Lot of Fun ..Goodluck
Thanks for the response. What speaker do you use now?
BenE
