Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
as posted before, i've been experimenting with a version of
Davey's passive line level xover in biamping my 1.6 for a while;
a few days ago i replaced the former caps in series with my
tweeters (polystyrene rel-cap RT series) by jensen copper foil
paper in oil; after critically listening to a lot of music, my
results are as followsthe music now flows in a more natural way than before, with
a lot of "bloom" thoroughout; there is a clear improvement in
resolution, then in palpability, inmediacy & low level detail;
decays are longer and ambience & air are impressive when recorded;
the soundstage is clearly fuller and better articulated;
individual images are fuller and bigger in size, so even
small instruments, with less harmonics, say violin or lute,
now sound more musical, then more believable & enjoyable;
more complex keyboard instruments (piano, harpsichord) seem
to provide you with a full symphonic concert by themselves;
organ is now sounding even better, for although the bass was
before already very good, now the midrange texture and the
highs are more natural; string quartets are now MUCH more
musical, mainly because the midrange has become "magic" (this
is usual with jensen caps) and the highs are much more fullbodied;
vocals sound clearly more human & involving, and even not
particularly good tenors & baritones sound more palatable;
grand symphonic orquestra & chorus sound even more spectacular,
due to the higher resolution; finally, jazz & pop & rock are
more enjoyable than ever before, being this particularly true
with highly distorted electric guitar, which is sounding me
even "musical"! in a word, warmer treble & magic midrange in a
much more musical general contextmy circuit is now as follows:
high pass: 5.49k ser (vishay) - 4.53k par (caddock) - 2.2nF ser (jensen copper/pio)
low pass: 5.11k ser (vishay) - 68nF par (relcap) - 49.9k ser (vishay) - 22nF par (relcap)
further upgrade? hmmmm... i think i'm done, but i may try
a couple of those tantalum resistors later onhey guys: if you want to listen your maggies 1.6 to their best,
passive biamping is the way, and i assure you i know what i'm
talking about, after having been tweaking my pair for 1 whole yeari hope to be able to send Mart a final section for my mods
page on biamping soonbest, paco

You've still got both the woofer and QR hooked directly to your amplifiers?These particular Jensen caps are designed for speaker level use are they not?
Regards.
Davey.
> > You've still got both the woofer and QR hooked directly to your amplifiers?yep; thanks to your magnificent circuit design!

these copper/pio jensen caps are line level, i.e. audio signal caps;
the speaker caps they make are for speaker xover networks between
amps & drivers; you can easily have a look at their website and
email them (audio@jensencapacitors.com), as Mr Hans Jensen is
extremely kind and helpful (he 1% matched my caps with no charge!);
you may like them & there is little to loose (just about $16 each
plus VAT & shipping)best, paco
Hi, PacoI ordered two jesen caps for my coming foreplay pre. But they mistakenly sent me the caps for speakers. Do you know what is the difference between line level caps and speaker caps?
Thanks in advance!
what values did you order? did you specify all the details (alu, copper, etc.)?
how do you know they are speaker caps? the main difference is
voltage and price, if i'm not mistaken; see the jensen website
for more info and email them with your problem: they will help you!
good luck!
best, paco
