Hi all, I just wanted to give a short review of my Gunned MMG`s. I`ve had them about 4 months now and they are breaking in quite nicely. Admittedly their breakin period reminded me of " The Exorcist" One day smooth and nice , one day horrid and glaring. PG said "shut the door and just burn `em in" He was right. They now sound as smooth as silk, no glare and wonderful. Let me go back some years and tell my story in order to give an accurate assesment. I started with MMG`s .After a short audition I gave `em a quick `n` dirty mod. Elevated, ridgid stands. (to get the vocals off the floor and to a more realistic listening area), Goetz coil , a Kimber cap and all silver wire. I loved them! But bigger is better , right? I bought the 1.6`s when they first came out( `98?)After an ample breakin they just didn`t sound the same. The emotion, involvment was gone. I was running a 150 WPC Plinius at very modest levels. ( In rotation a Music hall CD 25.2 modded cd player, CAL Aria, Mod Squad Prism and Euphonic Technologies players )I tried 4- Monarchy 200 WPC monoblocks w/ 3 different active xovers(even had a single point xover custom made) But it just wasn`t there. I heard of PG`s mod and had to give it a listen. With my amps and CD`s in hand I went to PA. I liked what I heard . Even though his other equip. is miles ahead of mine I had a good idea of what I was getting into. Not to re-hash it all over again but The Gunned mod gives all the attributes of both speakers and then does it one better. Room filling ,ACCURATE ,deep bass, imaging to die for, PRAT even my MMG`s didn`t have and a beautiful package to boot.I`ve listened to songs I`ve heard a hundred times and hear more detail than ever before. 40+ years ago my dad brought home a 10 WPC Lafayette tube amp, Garrard turntable and a pair of Criterion 2 -way 6" speakers. Me and my 2 older brother were blown away. I was hooked from that point on. The only trouble was the more I upgraded the more I listened to the equipment and not the music. I critiqued the system instead of enjoying the songs. PG`s mod brings back that enjoyment. I don`t know anything about measurements, electronic circuits, graphs or sine waves. I don`t even know what he`s got in those cute little xover boxes.(I`m a welder for the NJ Turnpike for Christ`s sake) But I do know the system as I have it now makes me feel like I did decades ago when my dad wanted to introduce his 3 boys to the joys of music.
Follow Ups:
I am glad you like them, and thanks for the post.
What you describe was my goal for myself all along. To make it a musical experience of "first order" (pun intended) and make worrying over the gear not even secondary, but eliminate it entirely.
I am sorry about your XO break in, and it bears mentioning for anyone wishing to use obbligato caps. About 1 out of every 15 or so seems to need extended break in (200-300 hours) and may go thru horrible fits of brightness and dullness until it is done. The good news is I have yet to see one not break in finally, and when they do they all sound the same. Some just get there sooner. So if you DIY an XO box and use them bear this in mind. What will give it away is the fact that it will vary, sometimes in the very same session.
It's all about the music...
Tom and Peter, is it the crossover break-in or are the drivers new?
I got the impression from Tom's post that the drivers were new.
Rod
They were very new.
I bought them used from a guy who only had them about one month. They were going to be the "touring" MMG's until Tom came along and I swapped them and the mod for his 1.6's
I told him some of the break in may have been due to that, but what I said about the obbligatos is true, you can run into some fussy ones now and again.

Always remember that you're unique. Just like everyone else.
Your honesty is refreshing. I think we have all been guilty of critiquing the system instead of listening to music at some point. That is probably the biggest inherant flaw with audiophiles.
I would love to hear those gunned mmgs!
Best of luck and ENJOY!
Thanks
I am in the middle of a complete equiptment change Robber, probably another month or so, some travelin to do, but the 1 thing that wont change are the maggies. There are "Gunned" 1.6's in the city.
Nice! We may have to meet up for a cold one some time and talk a little shop. Miami isnt exactly an audiophile haven. We dont even have a decent 2ch centric shop.
Do you already have the speakers? Post some pics.

...just enjoying the music.
congrats and enjoy!
