I’ve got a quick question concerning maggies. I’ve currently got a set of 1.5’s and I’m thinking about purchasing a set of 2.5s. Is this a worthwhile investment? I can’t find any reviews comparing the older maggies. I’m currently using an older Sony 1000esd preamp and have them bi-amped with adcom amps. I’m either looking at upgrading the preamp or the speakers, and I don’t know where to put the money. Any advise would be appreciated.
Follow Ups:
Series-2 requires about 50% more amperes than series-1 to sound their best, IMHO. However, insufficient amperes aren't the issue with ADCOMs, IME. Clean amperes usually are.Of course the true-ribbon makes the MG-2.5/Rs far superior in transparency than MG-1.5/QRs. Interpretation: you will likely hear the graininess of the amplifier even more.
By shear coincidence, they both (MG-2.5/Rs & MG-1.5/QRs) suffer from a midrange lull in their respective 2-way XOs which was corrected by their immediate successors (MG-2.6/Rs & MG-1.6/QRs).

Hello Josh,I've owned 2.5R's for 19 years, however never heard 1.5's. If these are anything like 1.6's, then most certainly the 2.5's are worthwhile. Many consider the 2.x maggies the best speakers for value Magnepan ever made. Why they stopped making them is beyond me.
I don't know what you are using for power, but 2.5's like lots of it. 250wpc of high current power, IMO, is minimum for best performance. Also, they really open up in larger size rooms.
If the 2.5's are still stock, I highly recommend up-grading the XO components, binding posts, and doing the fuse by-pass. Spikes are necessary, or better yet have proper stands built for them.
