Or offer a subsidy, assuming that Biden can get a tax holiday through congress. Our government rightly emphasizes that we are trying to increase supply, not demand - making such a tax holiday irresponsible.
Follow Ups:
we eagerly await details on the plan....
...the Federal gas-tax is only $0.18/gal, so the savings at the pump are only 3-4% at best (depending on where you live).
The gas tax is supposed to support transportation infrastructure (roads and bridges). Our transportation infrastructure is in such bad shape and lacking funding that we had to include it in a massive (borrowing) infrastructure bill.
So, if the existing tax-structure/revenues are so inadequate that we have to borrow money to "prop-up" our transportation infrastructure, why would we suspend collection of those revenues? How much more money will we need to "borrow" to make up for that lost revenue?
I've used this analogy before--if you can't pay your bills right now, just borrow a bunch of money and then quit your job.

Americans either need gas or are addicted to it. So they lower the price a meager amount, then bring it back up 3 months later.
Wow the dealer is giving a temp discount, get your fix while you can
so, I searched and found that OPEC will increase production by almost 650K barrels per day starting in July and continuing in August. It's interesting to me that I keep up with news, but the stories on increased production by OPEC didn't make my newsfeeds. Seems like that would be pertinent to issues of the day. I think MBS/Saudi Arabia has been intentionally slow to act based on some bad things said about MBS by western leaders including Biden and the fact that Russia and SA are getting tight.
Much like mining tar sands, but ok...
Nearly everyone in the US goes out and buys a HUGE SUV or four door pickup truck (folks who have nothing to pick up and who's truck beds have nary a scratch from real use), while global oil prices are in the $20 range and then whine like babies demanding a cut in the gas tax when global oil prices ramp up to $100 and gas is expensive again (as it was the last time oil prices sky-rocked).
And Biden has no choice or the Dems will loose both houses of congress in the mid-terms. And they may anyway because people blame him for the follow-on effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
We've become a land of ignorant, self centered pussies who think only of ourselves. Everyone here wants to carry a gun but only 1 in 100 would think of enlisting so the few that do have to serve multiple tours in war zones and return with PTSD (if not kill themselves out of desperation).
Want to see a US President removed from office? Have him suggest re-implementing the draft!
Either that or refuse to cut the federal gas tax.
Sensible.
The truth hurts and annoys the self centered pussies, who are Legion, Spoiled but
most of all ENTITLED.
The rest of us get stirred up in the constantly churning chaos of complain/bitch/whine.
Heaven's Forbid ANY American be inconvenienced by anything the may be inconvenient.
We DEMAND supply!
We pay taxes to avoid that, right? That IS the reason we pay taxes, right?

Where to begin...
"We've become"? Human's have always been "ignorant self-centered pussies" as were the so-called "greatest generation" until threatened and shot at.
The Federal Gas Tax is about 18 cents/gallon. Even adding a State Tax suspension of approx. 30 Centavos, how much fiscal stimulus will that bring to supply and demand? Bupkus!
BTW, that "1 in a 100"? More and more of them are successfully running for Congress, PTSD and all and the one's winning ain't no Chardonnay-sipping Vegans. Or hadn't you noticed?
Happy about that?
for savings per month, driving an F-150 Bro-Dozer a 1,000 miles a month, to work.
Maybe people can treat themselves to a Big Mac value meal?

Just have to stay up with all the other red necks in the hood.

Stored value card (apparently) going out to everybody (including my son who doesn't own a car?), but nobody knows how it's going to work yet. How to limit purchases to gasoline only?
And won't a month-long tax holiday and/or a rebate card just increase demand which is what's driving up the price in the first place?
But you know how it goes. There's no force on earth more powerful than a political issue waiting to be exploited.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Now, they could just suspend the 50+ cent gas tax, but they'd rather give money to just the poor regardless of their ownership of a car that actually uses gas.
-Rod
It's stupid because by November, gasoline prices could very well be going down again and nobody will remember what was happening back in June.
And I'm dead set against giving any kind of relief to folks who daily drive pickups and SUVs. It's just rewarding bad behavior. They should be paying an extra tax instead of getting a cut.

Tell me about it.
I am hoping you are not one of those who believe this is a good idea...
privileged whites could not easily avoid it, as they managed the last time we had one.
Keeping in mind that Presidents Joe Biden, Donald J. Trump, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton did not serve and George W. Bush managed to escape real service during Vietnam by hiding in the Air National Guard.
Don't ask what Reagan did during the war, daddy, but at least he was in.

My post listed the past presidents who did NOT serve or who served inactively.
Note there was no mention of Jimmy, Tricky Dick, LBJ or JFK, all who served on active duty.
I pointed it out because you started with Raygun and covered all POTUS since except GHWB. In my opinion it needs a mention as he was a war hero.

Flew 35 combat missions and received numerous combat awards.

And he enlisted, wasn't drafted.

If you had money, you could pay your way out of the draft during the Civil War.
In the second world war, the cannon fodder in the front lines, they were the poor kids. Same with Vietnam.
I used to think that if there were a draft, the MIC wouldn't be so quick to commit US troops all over the world (in case anybody missed it, Biden's redeploying US combat troops to Somalia), but it's just too easy to manipulate public opinion.

I liked it as it speaks to truth.
