The Texas power grid authority has advised cutting consumption.
And it's only the middle of May!
Still want to move to Texas, everyone? Go ahead!
Follow Ups:
The time of year (mid-May) isn't the issue. We're having a solid week of unseasonably hot weather. The issue is: Why can't 'they' figure out how to run a power grid?! It's not as if it was just invented last year!
I suspect that a big part of the problem is the phenomenal growth in some parts of the state, and 'they' can't build power plants fast enough. The same kind of thing is happening with our water supply. Where are all the new lakes and reservoirs?!
And whatever happened to all those "supply chain" problems?

In a typical scenario, PMs are done to prevent 'random' failures. You PLAN to fix stuff before it breaks. If you have enough history AND properly written specifications, this WORKS.
Problems? Well......California, for example, is trying to get EVs on the road enmass. This means charging at night which means LESS opportunity to do necessary maintenance. And more change of the random, grid-screwing failure....
Too much is never enough
I was going to pass this over but I need to point out your babbling smacks of idiocy.

OK, so who to blame?
I'll blame air-conditioning.

any new way to do so sure doesn't bode well.

Some of the Enron folks that didn't go to prison are deeply involved in the power bidness here.
For a story that'll curl yer toes go look up the Hunt family's involvement in the electric biz here in Tejas and the tie ins to former San Diego P&L execs acting as shills for them in an attempt to do a modern day Enron here. Yes, the very same Hunt family that tried to gain a monopoly in the silver market in days of yore.
No wonder Rick "oops" Perry pushed so hard for deregulation and sale of our regulated public utilities to the highest bidders.
There are many "political families", both here in Texas and all over the country and the world. For folks who are wondering what Sondek is talking about, the Hunt brothers thought they would make a massive fortune by cornering the silver metal market. Their plan didn't work out so well, and they lost a boatload of money. That was in 1980. (42 years ago, for folks in Rio Linda.) Two of the three brothers have passed away, and the third is 93.I don't keep up on political families in general, so I don't know what the Hunt family involvement in the Texas electrical grid is. I do remember that most, if not all, the ERCOT Board members (as of February 2021) didn't even live in Texas. Maybe Sondek can fill us in on the details.
But for those who are into this sort of thing (political families), check out the Daley family in Chicago. Having grown up in Wisconsin, I know a little of the history and shennanigans.

Familiar with the Daley machine, not the Hunts. The Deley machine used to put pink slips in all municipal employees paycheck envelops the week prior to an election.
The well known pink slips usually meant "YOU ARE FIRED". The week before election, the threatening pink slips said, "DON'T FORGET TO VOTE".

I have a sister that lives in Houston & her husband works for BP.
He's retiring in a couple years but already bought a place in Montana,
Where the dental-floss grows.
Texas to Montana is going to be a drastic change in temps for him.

...not the kind of winters I like, but I could deal. Guns are fine, gov't isn't up your ass on every little thing, and if you "keep your nose clean", no one will bother you.

Don't come unless you can bring your own water, air and electricity.
Otherwise, you'll just be part of the problem.
...it isn't the greatest, but it's clean, affordable, I get all 4 seasons, and don't have to worry much about the gov't intrusions.

I'm pretty law abiding, don't drink and drive a hundred miles an hour and risk innocent people's lives so I don't have to worry about wanting a corrupt government so much as you. I'll stay away from the likes of Ohio, freezing cold and no ocean. No thanks.

We used have all of that except the four seasons.
Legal immigration has just about ruined the place.
First waves of it started in the late'70's and it hasn't stopped. It slowed from time to time, but never stopped. The last two to three years it's accelerated beyond the capacity of the infrastructure. Something has got to give.
I'm curious to know of the people that have immigrated?

Should have read: legal emigration.
You let me down.

They used to be all over the place in SoCal. Now they just bus them in by the truckloads.

In both places ac is a necessity for masses. Grid drops in Texas, low-draw dams in Arizona; same results in the making -- misery and dead people.
The old saying, follow the money, is today's bad advice. Follow the water and the thermometer.
...I'd be a lot happier in certain areas of TX or AZ than anyplace in FL, GA, MS, AL, and most of LA (I do love NOLA in the fall). Not a fan of hot/humid swamps--especially the humidity.
The problem with a lot of areas of the SW (and even CA), is that people are trying to farm and live in areas that even our indigenous folks had basically deemed uninhabitable for generations. There are modern-day "ghost towns" in the SW. Move out into the desert, dig some wells, divert/dam some rivers and plant/irrigate some crops. Then comes the homes, schools, shopping centers, hospital, etc. Water demand goes through the roof. The aquifer gets depleted and you can't dig any deeper or divert anything else for some more. Some places were deemed largely uninhabitable for a reason--long before we got here.
Massive AC demand just exacerbates the situation. Corridors of power lines that start fires--if they can even meet demand capacity.

And you end up in flyover country, the rust belt and god forbid, the snow belt. I know some who would prefer a slow painful death.
Ted is on the move.
That was yesterday's news.
If anyone is wondering what deregulation looks like, this is it. Built in incentives to not produce too much.
Current demand and supply info at the linkie.
The frequency chart is pretty consistent.
About 0.08 Hertz variance. Time to break out the power regenerator.

Won't be taxes.
It'll be rate increases. Have been expecting those since Uri.
And this is all after Governor Hotwheels "promised" us everything was fixed and we had nothing to worry about. Ha. Haha ha.

Bought my first regenerator in 2008. Still using it on the video rig. Bought a second one with more huevos for the audio system. Everything runs through it.
A satisfied regenerator owner. The lead/acid batteries in my PurePower units came in real handy when the grid shit itself winter of 2021. Kept phones charged and a couple of table lamps going.
Too hot for my blood.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
