I just don't get Biden. He is going to kill the country before climate change has a chance. Explain to me how this makes any sense at all. It seems every time he makes a decision he ends up kicking his own ass.
This will go over great for the Republican Party in the upcoming elections. LMAO Stuff like this can be generational. He is dragging down the whole Democrat party. Congrats to those who voted for this senile clown.
You see it, right?
Everyone is reporting it, but I linked to the CBS report for those that have a problem with any Concervative reporting.

Wasn't it Sarah Palin that said that as if she were going to just shoot holes through the Earth's crust?
And there wasn't much interest in leases, the White House said. Ask yourself this: Is it in Big Oil's interest to have a lot of oil on the world market and see its price fall below zero like it did a couple of years ago, or to judiciously release oil onto the market and rack up $20 billion in profit? There's your answer, and it will always be the answer as long as we are driving those giant SUVs and dependent on fossil fuels.
There are 9000 approved and available oil leases, that the oil company's could be drilling on.
If big oil can drill less, (saving labor and production costs), and simply raise the price and increase profits 3-fold, why wouldn't they?
Altruistic they are not. Price gouging opportunists: yes they are.

At least 10 years of drilling for unused leases according to this article.
"Embrace the mundane"- Dan John
The last leases were given and they haven't developed anything. THis is a non event. They haven't run out of places to drill or frack, they aren't doing any of that.

This is a decision for the long term and it would have no effect on the market in the short term.
Once you start leasing the Cook inlet, it would be hard to stop. It would require building underwater pipelines and other infrastructure in the upper part of the Cook inlet, which is the most populated part of Alaska and has the most tourism. It's also a key salmon fishery. A major spill would be a total disaster there, much, much worse than the Exxon Valdez because of its location.
If the area were leased, it would be take years before it started having an effect on the oil supply, and the overall impact on supply would be so small that it wouldn't move prices. By then, the short term oil price shock we're in right now would be long gone.
I think the administration would have gone forward with the other lease in the Gulf of Mexico, but that was blocked by a judge and the clock ran out in this 5-year cycle. I expect that will come up again and will be leased.
If you think in the very short term and are so politically minded that you see everything in the context of the next election, then I understand why you think Biden is shooting himself in the foot. But I don't like voting for politicians who only care about being popular and getting elected. I want my politicians to use their time in office to make good decisions for the long term.
That's cool! But Dem polititions running for office will be avoiding Biden like the plague. Senile Joe has fallen in with the far left agenda and it's killing the Dem party. But Joe only knows what those around him tell him and put in front of him to read. If you support that, then go for it.
Things hurting biden: Inflation and Energy Prices
Things helping him: Leaked SCOTUS memo. Ukraine.
THings are so polarized there will be few switching sides, but turnout will be king. And how successful the voter suppression works against that turnout.

Potential Trump re-entry.
I think he is doing good, close to great job on Ukraine, but overall he still is just a C- President.
I still feel he should announce in 2023 not running in 2024, to give his party a fighting chance.
...Trump was elected by the "anti-Hillary" camp. Biden was elected by the "anti-Trump" camp. Neither party has a "winning candidate" (or should I say a specific qualified candidate) "groomed" and ready to go for 2024. Once again, we'll get our pick of dumb or dumber with the most money behind them.
So what two marginally-competent aging white men will we get to choose from for this next cycle? Or will the Dems stand behind the current policy of "only females of color need apply?"--for any Federal position.

yes, HillBillery, Billery, Shrillery, etc..isnt the kind of candidate that will sway any voters. Her vote count was set on day one of campaign.
I was in a bar in fall of 2016 and the yokels there had fox news on and trump was making some whistle stop speech somewhere and speaking in broken sentences and making no sense.
One of the younger yokels said to one the "elders", "I have no idea what he's talking about"
the elder said to the younger, "he's sayin' we aint giving our money to baby making n***ers any more"
the younger said, "you got all that from that", or something like that.
the elder said a line similar to Jack Nicholson in the movie Hoffa.
he said "boy, you're listening to the words and not hearin' the melody"
I texted my sister Trump is gonna win, book it.

I agree.
...just give me a competent/qualified candidate--and not limit the qualifications to "female of color" (reverse discrimination) and we'll all be good to go. Just like there is a minimum age to serve as President--there should also be a maximum allowed. Lots of corporations have mandatory retirement ages--for a reason.

Non-Starter.
As long as pols are part of the larger corporate structure, it'll be business as usual with everycouple years one being discovered DEAD as his or her desk.
Why would ANY 88 year old woman WANT to be Senator? Several others in the 80s.....with AVERAGE age rising every election.
I wouldn't know where to start to unravel THIS mess.......
Too much is never enough
...for all elected offices--local, state, and federal. A desire to perform public service is one thing, but being a career politician is a whole different scenario, and a huge problem.
Sure, if you want to go from state rep to governor, then keep going. If you want to go from a Senator or Governor to the Presidency, then keep going. But if you want to be a Senator in one state, in the same district for the remainder of your natural life--NO. You've got X# of terms/years to accomplish what you want to accomplish, and that's it. Move up or move out.
There should not be "seniority" in the House and Senate. Not saying that "junior" members of Congress aren't bought and paid for before they are elected, but they shouldn't be allowed to hang-around forever and then gain "influence".

Exactly......Unintended consequences when simply saying 'you can serve X years and out'....
Might be better to impose an AGE limit. Like everyone else required to retire at some point.
Other 'fixes'? Can't go from government to lobbyist.
Get rid of Corporate Personhood. If it can't be Executed.....It's not a person.
Simply BAN or severely Modify 'Soft Money'......
Campaign spending CAPS based on Number of Registered Voters, Cost of Living and office.
President is a higher limit per voter than ANY State Office.
Congressional Redistricting is handled BY COMPUTer which draws boundries based on equal population and shortest border. No more 'safe districts' and populist drawing of lines.....
Too much is never enough
That all sounds fine and dandy, but, what Congress is going to impose a term limit on itself?
That's the sticky wicket.

I tend to agree about term limits but I think we need to bear in mind that it takes a while for pols to gain expertise in policy and legislation. They also need to develop good working relations both within their party and with the opposing party. Not that easy to come up with a sensible time limit.

Last time I checked Hillary wasn't "of color" no matter how hard she tried.
But right now the most reliable voting base for Democrats are "of color" so there is that, too.
But I agree, as things stand right now, aside from Trump and Biden, it is not clear at all who might be viable in the general, though DeSantis clearly has his eye on it, though I think he appeals to the current radicalized GOP than the general population.

Pubs are going to any length to hide their Ivy League educations. Look at Cruz and Vance.
I don't want my politicians to make short-sighted or counter-productive decisions to appease an ignorant public hungry for red meat.
Members of the public can't be well versed in all policy. We depend on our politicians and their staff and advisors to consider decisions more deeply than just "all oil drilling is bad" vs. "drill baby drill", and then explain their decisions to their constituents.
We also depend on the media to help educate us on the factors that weigh into these decisions. The biggest problem we have in this country right now is that the most influential media figures are driven by political agendas who try to frame every policy in D vs. R terms. Consequently, the news that most people consume today is mostly noise, not signal. And that's largely our fault because it's what we choose to consume.
Regarding Biden, I think he's OK. Not great, but OK. My biggest gripe with him was Build Back Better, but that failed. I wish his communications skills were better, more like Reagan or Obama than GWB.
And that one is not going to help him.
For instance, ask 10 people if Biden stopped the Keystone line, and get ready for 9 answers be wrong.
Watch the "man on the street" interviews.

Maybe because after getting the lease and doing some exploratory drilling there wasn't enough oil or gas to be productive enough to invest more money in?
Nope. Right now the oil companies are not even ramping up production in their current fields let alone the leases that have them covered for known reserves for 10 years of development.
There is a manpower and equipment shortage that was brought about by the negative oil prices in 2020 and the mass layoffs (and this was a big failure of the previous administration, who could have targeted oil production companies)
Right now they get insanely high prices for their product and for them that's just fine. At least for now.
It is clear that the Biden administration isn't from the oil patch, but this lease thing is a nonissue

Given the generally anti-oil mood of the current administration, people are reluctant to start investing... who knows, you put millions into drilling and then Biden passes another gas... sorry, regulation.
Business climate is important, and the current one is all but friendly towards oil and gas.
The oil and gas companies have enough oil and gas wells. They wised up this time and decided they weren't going to produce more in order to drive up the cost/barrel. Each time in the past when oil prices went up production followed driving the prices back down. They thrived on thin margins before with a boom and bust cycle. Now they are looking to break the cycle. $100+/barrel oil and making big bucks is a lot better story to shareholders than $40/barrel oil and scraping by.
You have seen the many posts of the big profits that oil companies are reporting the last three quarters. Do you think the strategy is working out for them?
If you follow it deeper you would find out a lot of this is intertwined with the Rump imposed tariffs.
Moral of the story.....buy stock in oil and gas companies. I'm betting on Cottera Energy.
It sucks to get old. It really sucks to get old and bitter.
short of overextending themselves on the financial side. These are publicly traded firms and their investors like stock buy-backs and dividends. Can't spend ALL the money on growth.
But the rig count is still going up, albeit at only a few percent per month (seven in the last week).
A thousand by the end of the year? Doubtful but I suppose it's possible. Current price of crude makes sitting on the sidelines a very difficult thing for oil guys.
And while the US may be the worlds largest producer these days? Even with that, US producers can't really change the global price of oil just by raising or slowing production a bit. Not even the Saudis can do that by themselves, even though we are taught to believe they can do that.
Edits: 05/12/22
It seems clear it is about climate change. The Interior Dept claimed its commitment to reducing fossil fuels by at least 50% by 2030, hence stopping the oil leases citing lack of interest. Yet Biden seeks to buy oil from Turkey, Iran and Venezuala. How does that make any sense? In an attempt to reduce pollution from fossil fuels, we destroy our economy, but ask other country to pump and sell it to us?
Our country is now being ran by environmentalists that apparently don't care about the citizens and the damage they are causing to our country. And as of yet we have nothing that can replace fossil fuels. No one, no one produces fossil fuels as environmentally clean as in the USA. Yet Biden ok'd the Russian pipeline to the EU and shuts down our pipeline and drilling. He needs a cranium search!
Yes, I still believe global warming and cooling has been happening for millennia long before mankind walked the earth. But Steve, don't you believe in the science? No I don't and there are lots of scientist who don't believe it either.
Tisk tisk tisk!
Do you think if Biden approved all the leases he just canceled it would have any effect whatsoever on the price of gas now? WTF do you think, they'd start drilling tomorrow, score big oil discoveries immediately, send millions of barrels of oil to refineries next week, it'd all reach your local gas station by next month and prices would come down in time to drive from LA to NYC this summer for peanuts?
The majority of your posts just seem like right wing propaganda to appeal to fools. You certainly don't convince anybody who ISN'T an ignorant fool.
So you say you like me? Sorry bro, homey don't play those games. So let your Parkinson's do the work.

and the oil industry might try to SELL you that reasoning, but that's not how they make decisions.
During the pandemic, smaller publicly traded oil companies with market caps in the billions went belly up.
Check the 5 year history on Whiting Petroleum (I used to work for one of their original founders).
They are not gonna do that again, even with oil prices through the roof.
US Presidents can not influence the price of fungible global commodities, short of starting WW-III. And the major oil companies have the big oil plays in the US sewn up. Texas, New Mexico and North Dakota together represent about 64% of total US oil production. And the big guys own and/or control nearly every square inch of it.
All of this nonsense about federal land and off shore leases is the talk of small timers. Mostly the politically aligned small producers who have few rights in the big plays so they try to convince you that if only they could drill in a national park, all of our energy problems would be over.
You're smarter than that, Vic.
At least I hope you are.
It's pretty easy to come to the conclusion when Biden stands at the microphone and basically declares war on the fossil fuel industry. Which he did. And on his first day in office signs an Executive Order to stop the Keystone XL pipeline. Gas prices soar and while they are at the highest price recorded in American history he stops the lease drilling in the Gulf and in Alaska? Explain to me again how that is a good look to the American people.
if the American people are no better informed than you.
And they appear not to be.
Thank you!
When I bought Chevron stock at $82/share, I thought that maybe that was too high.
Wrong... again. Should I sell it, or keep taking in the dividend?

"Embrace the mundane"- Dan John
Even with the large school district including as many residents outside the village limits, we have twice as many house districts as high schools.
The town was reliably Republican for over a century; the (not quite true) joke was the last time the town sent anybody other than a Republican to the house, they sent a Whig.
Back for a bit again. Ignore me if you like.
No matter which party does it. The small town my wife and I used to live in was gerrymandered after the 2010 mid-terms. It was heavily Democratic at the time, some of the Democrats were added to a safe Democrat seat in order to waste those votes. The rest were parceled out to safe Republican districts where the votes wouldn't matter.
After 2010, the Republicans redrew the districts in a way that guarantees GOP control of the state legislature pretty much for good. Votes in rural counties count for more than votes in cities.
This is just another way we think we're a free country but really aren't. When politicians get to tailor their own constituencies, our elections are a fraud.
Supreme Court says it's A-OK, is getting ready to strip state courts of the power to redraw maps.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
I live in a small purple state with just two districts. There has been a recurring debate over whether to define districts such that there are two competitive districts, or one Republican-leaning district and one Democrat-leaning district.
In 2011, the Republican House + Democratic Governor opted to make two competitive districts, but the balance ended up such that one district has continued to elect a Democratic incumbent by small but stable margins, while the other has swung back and forth.
This time, the Republican Governor and Republican House are fighting over plans. The Governor proposed a map that looks similar to the current one, but with adjustments to make two equally competitive districts again. The House proposed a map that would make one Democratic district and one Republican district.
There is now a third proposal on the table from a Republican State Rep that appears to be the least gerrymandered if you look at the map, but has the same effect of turning 2 competitive districts into one D and one R. It also places the largest city, which is a Democratic stronghold, within a solidly Republican district.
So, who is right?
Whoever makes it less likely that traitors to the country and the Constitution get elected.

I could not agree more.
What we have nowadays is courses for horses.
SuperPACs, big money donations...yeah, I know, the originalists on the Supreme Court who treat the Constitution like a shopping list somehow managed to find "money equals speech" in the First Amendment.
Right now, AIPAC is running attack ads against a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the Pennsylvania 12th district--my district.
Her opponent for the nomination is a DINO, of course. Former corporate attorney, oil and gas lobbyist, etc.
The attack ads are beyond misleading, claiming the candidate voted against Biden's infrastructure plan even though she isn't in Congress. Wasn't in Congress last year either. And frankly, I would have voted against the infrastructure plan also. Too much money for new roads, not enough for public transit, not enough to fix the old roads.
Should be blatantly illegal. Should be illegal for a billionaire from California to pump enough money into an Ohio primary to decide the race, too.
And of course, I can't vote in the primary since I'm registered Green. Another way our elections are a fraud.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Citizens United is absolutely THE worst SCOTUS decision of my lifetime.
Unlimited, dark-money to buy whatever cause suits your fancy is anti-democratic. No two ways about it.

It don't mean shit.
Where does oil come from?
And further, the BIG oil producers have more currently either owned or under lease than they can possibly drill on.
are going to see it. They will see it as a feeble old man further declaring war on our oil and gas producers when we already have the highest prices recorded in American history. I'm sure that will work out well for the Dems at the polls. TRUTH!
The American public doesn't do nuance, isn't interested in detail, and above all, refuses to accept any responsibility for anything it does. Check out the parking lot at any shopping center, you'll see why we've got high gas prices and it has nothing to do with Joe Biden.
Americans have the power to lower gas prices by using less. But conservation is un-American. Spending way too much money on way more car than you need, and driving everywhere, even down to the mailbox on the corner. That's the ticket.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
But Trump doesn't deserve credit for gas prices dropping below $2. I was filling up for several months at $1.47/gal.

Average gas price after Trump was in office for 2 years......
Edits: 05/12/22
The last time gas prices were this high, Obama had just been inaugurated. By his last year in office, the price per gallon had dropped about 50%. He doesn't deserve the credit, just like neither he nor W deserved blame for $4/gallon gas.
If Trump had been re-elected, we'd be (incorrectly) blaming him for high gas prices instead of Biden. Because we still would have had high gas prices. And inflation.
Energy companies overproduced and got caught with their pants down during the pandemic. They say they're not going to make that mistake again (though they probably will). They're not going to increase production and we all need to get used to higher prices. Tough titty.
Americans failed to learn any lessons from Katrina, for that matter from the oil shocks of the 1970s. We want big cars, vehicles that are more about ego stroke than transportation needs. Americans think cheap gas is a birthright, then they roll out the door and mortgage the next 9 years for a Jeep Grand Wagoneer and cry like toddlers when it costs $80 to fill the tank.
Americans love the free market and want government to butt out until the free market bites them on the ass. Then they demand that government "do something."
We're a nation of spoiled children, far beyond the control of any president.
