Maybe we should add ...
If your gun is used by someone else in a crime, you go to jail too.
If your gun is used by someone else and kills someone, you go to jail, for a very long time.
If your gun is used by someone else and kills a bunch of people, you go to jail for life, or face a firing squad, your choice.
If you don't like that arrangement, either don't own a gun, or make sure it can never, ever be held by anyone but you.

Follow Ups:
I saw a video that they are working on some sort of fingerprint reader for the gun like on a laptop that only the registered owner can unlock the safety with his fingerprint. Presumably, you can have multiple fingerprints say for your wife/partner to also operate it. Hey at least someone is attempting some sort of practical solution that can at least stop the family's 5-year old from blowing his brains out accidentally.
But alas, it's still just a variation on a lock and all locks can be bypassed by someone really motivated. But it could stop the crazies and that's not nothing.
It just took a little time.
...a kid walking into a classroom and blowing away a bunch of other kids.
Comon' E ...you've been kinda' rough on me lately.
Seriously, why not punish the owner of the gun, at least somewhat ?
And don't reply with "well, what about the owners of the hammers and the baseball bats". They aren't classified as weapons and don't kill people from a distance.
I'm not trying to be a troll here, or argumentative. Like you (I think), I'd like to see less gun violence.
As you pointed out, the laws are in place. They obviously aren't a deterrent.
Is our society just too far gone and if we would like less gun violence, we need to move to another country?

being the suggestion to enact absurd laws to combat violence.
Comon' E ...you've been kinda' rough on me lately.
I stand by the notion that your saying "a journalist doesn't have any ideas of his own" and "not capable of critical thought" is childish.
I asked for your ideas/suggestions to help curb gun violence.
It appears you have none, but are okay with calling suggestions of others absurd.
Not what I'd hoped for from you E.
...and I stand by what I implied about Rogan. Sorry you don't like the way I said it.
Have a great weekend.
I'm going to get back to work. No more AA coffee breaks for me.

But reasonable folks must put *solutions* into perspective.
According to the FBI:
More folks are killed by "blunt objects" than rifles.
More folks are killed by "hands, fists, feet, etc." than rifles
Do you have a reasonable solution to addressing the problem with hammers and bats?
I will go out on a limb and say that it is virtually impossible in reality.

the problem isn't how many people are murdered.
It's how many die within a specified period of time.
Otay!
E, that's a really lame response. Actually, it not even a response, its deflection.
Yes more people were killed by rifles than blunt objects (443/297).
Did you notice the number of total number of deaths by firearms verses blunt objects (10,265/443).
To answer your question, no, I don't have a reasonable solution to address the "problem with bats" (297). Nor do I consider it a problem yet worth addressing. We've got larger problems.
I am more concerned with staying on topic and addressing a solution to the problem with firearms (10,265).
Seems to me you are implying they are not a problem.
Now I'm really outta' here ...got to get home and lock up my bats.

Yes more people were killed by rifles than blunt objects (443/297).Look again. You have that bass-ackwards. (I hope you enjoy that reference)

Sure. Let's take a closer look. 60% of that number is due to suicide. If someone wants to take their own life, there are many ways to do that.
If you're really interested in reducing the number, perhaps you should inform yourself as to where the real problems lie. According to the CDC:
" Males account for 86% of all victims of firearm death and 87% of nonfatal firearm injuries. Rates of firearm violence also vary by age and race/ethnicity. Firearm homicide rates are highest among teens and young adults 15-34 years of age, and among Black, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and Hispanic populations. "
Translation: gang and drug related crime. Enacting a law to restrict magazine capacity of AR15s isn't going to impact that number at all. Do you understand?
I don't have a reasonable solution to address the "problem with bats" (297)
Dyslexia again.
edit: Just a head's up. Some folks don't seem to understand I frequently include hyperlinks to data sources. There's one in this post and in the previous one as well. Just click the blue text.

Here's something which disputes your view, at least related to gang related homicides. Note that it lists their sources.
Ok, then address the remaining violent crime committed by:
"Firearm homicide rates are highest among teens and young adults 15-34 years of age, and among Black, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and Hispanic populations. "
That CDC statement says zilch about gangs/drugs, nor does it counter the facts in what I linked.
address the core demographic as observed by the CDC.
I'm sure all those young men are fine upstanding youths. Who happen to commit the majority of murders.
It has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
