Just like the 9,000lb Hummer, I am struggling to see any practical relevance or application in the real world for this.
Who needs competitions for shooting AR type weapons?
In the Army, yes.
In amateur shooting - just no.

the AR15 is a very cost effective and accurate platform for the "varmint class" .223 cartridge among others. Accessories and ammunition are found most everywhere. You might find it ironic that about ten states restrict the use of that cartridge for hunting because it doesn't have enough power. And that the remarkably similar semi-auto Ruger Mini-14 chambered for the same cartridge has been available since 1974. It doesn't possess the "eveeel" look of the black gun, but operates the same way.
I've got two. I have a .22 rimfire bolt carrier for the .223 flavor which allows me to inexpensively plink at the range. As one who enjoys working with my hands, I built one from a kit. Naturally, there is a critical component that requires purchase from a FFL dealer which goes through the normal FBI check. My state issued concealed carry permit sufficed.
