The VX-6R is a slightly older radio but nothing wrong with that. The Icom and Yaesu radios are excellent.
A newer Yaesu model would be the FT70DR. I'm not sure if there are GMRS/FRS mods for it. I have the FT2DR with large B&W screen. The newest version is the FT5DR. You can find these via Google search with "HRO" for Ham Radio Outlet.
For example search on: FT70DR HRO
These radios are all programmable with special USB cable and software. I highly recommend RT Systems even though their products are not cheap. You can buy their software + correct USB cable as a package. If you later buy more radios that use the same USB cable, you can buy just the appropriate RT Systems software and use your existing cable.
The programming software + cable is a must IMHO. Otherwise you'll be spending days programming channels with the different features you want for each channel.
Visit RT Systems, click the brand on the left of the screen, click Handheld, Mobile, HF, Receiver for the type of radio.... then find your specific model.

Unless you have a call sign, the local HRO treats you like you have Plague. And if you DO have a call sign, they are still slow and not completely helpful........
I agree about programming. I'm fooling with a Beaofeng 5r model and it is deep. I use it only as a weather radio receiver, now......And at that? MUCH better than my 40 year old Radio Shack Weather Radio OR my Midland GMRS radios with the Weather Band features. a LOT better.
I can get way more than I SHOULD. Even from Catalina and who knows where else? 3 and if I sit outside very late? Maybe a 5th frequency.
If I get the Yaesu? I'll all-carte the cable and try CHIRP first. That may have all the functionality I need. From where I sit I can get ONE repeater on 2 mters at this end of the county......But have a pair of ground planes needing a SWR meter, some clippers and a piece of 3/4" PVC......
Too much is never enough
