High maintenance costs by BMW and hideous styling by Toyota?
Not considering other factors and going just on looks, I much prefer the Audi Sportback style vs the BMW Gran Coupe. And Audi is known for nicer interiors.Style: BMW 4 Series "Gran Coupe" vs Audi A5/S5 "Sportback"

To my eyes; every angle reinforces BMW styling has a BIG edge over Audi. Even with that huge, almost as bad as Lexus grill...
The only issue I have with it is the transmission lag which is non-existent in the BMW despite the fact that they both use the ZF8.
...if you're willing to hit the after-market and spend a few bucks (and potentially void any remaining warranty), that can be "altered" more to your liking.

I've used Dinan in the past. Dinan famously made good on BMW's warranty. However,in Ontario today, failure to disclose a hardware or software mod to your insurance company potentially voids your insurance coverage. Disclosing the mod often means you will be denied coverage.
...but I can see where that's going. Historically, the insurance companies have relied heavily on the VIN to assess risk for a given vehicle. The alpha-numeric VIN indicates what drive-train/performance package is in the vehicle. If that has been altered--engine-swap or "tuner" package, I can see their "loop-hole".

Ah, you may have mentioned the Audi. I've never owned one but I really like their styling over recent BMW. The ZF8 in the BMW is incredible. My 2013 X3 M-Sport was very quick shifting in sport mode and more tame in comfort mode. The paddle shifters worked nicely too, not just decoration.
The funny thing is, my current Honda Passport has a ZF transmission and in comparison to the BMW it shifts like a marshmallow ;-) It might have something to do with how the automaker programs them ??
Of course programming rules........
And perhaps a 'harsh' or 'fast' shifting program eventually compromises the reliabilty of the part?
Too much is never enough
I figure it either strains krill (or,I suppose, bugs) from the air it slices through to gather 'green' energy -- or it's gonna need braces when it gets to be a teen-ager.

..."coupe", to me, means two doors--preferably without a door-frame around the window--just glass. You can put a "vestigial" back-seat in a two-door coupe, just as easily as adding two unnecessary doors. The giant "cheese-grater" grill doesn't help much, either, but at least it's not as bad as any new Lexus.
ALL of these small/mid-size sedans and even SUVs need to join WW. They are all getting "fat" or "bloated" for their wheelbase.

Or rather my first choice if I didn't have a wife. I love the minimalist design and lower mass.
Looks like a common little hatch to the untrained eye. But man, they're pricey for a VW. I like the new GTI's too. I had a 1983 VW GTI Rabbit and a 2003 Golf GTI.Me and my 1983 GTI:

I'm still driving my 08 R32, original owner, 40k miles on it. Love the narrow angle six, don't care about more speed. For transportation on a interstate highway, I just rent a new car.
For a "hot hatch" the GTI and now R have kind of set the standard. The only thing that has even come close (years ago) was a friend's Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS. If I were in that particular market, the Golf R or Civic R would be in stiff competition.

It's rated pretty well, too. I'm just not a real fan of the styling, and the hard rake to the hatch kind of defeats the purpose of having a hatch--not much room back there.

We like our '14 428i RWD convertible. A great cruiser, just enough power and a nice comfort handling balance - No beaver teeth.

I wouldn't want one. BMW have the most uncomfortable seats I've ever used.
...I rented one a year (probably two years) ago, and the interior was leather--but school bus/industrial leather. They were like leather-wrapped cement blocks. It handled like a school bus too!

The R&T article below is about the 2020 BMW M340i. Fortunately, the 2022 model keeps the nicer looking (IMHO) face and grill.

I'd allow that in my driveway! :)
Shocked that it's over 3800# though, my Acadia is only around 150# heavier, my 3 series' IIRC we're around 3400#
Still, I'll take one in black, or maybe even blue (somehow with a stick tho).
I prefer the smaller cars like the BMW 135i M-Sport that I once owned. It was a fun car but not great on long road trip. My wife didn't care for it much as it was a little choppy with the shorter wheelbase and stiff suspension.2008 BMW 135i M-Sport 6-Speed

corners at 1.0 G, but has a well damped ride and with the dual clutch tranny, loafs along at highway speed for a quiet and comfortable ride - at least while not in sport or sport+ mode!
And has two trunks for carrying stuff.

I really don't like the looks of the M340i. Otherwise, what's to disagree with, except that the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe is just as fast and more practical? (Neither is available in RWD in Canada.)
If you want even more practical there's the 2021 BMW X5M. The 2022 will get the larger buck tooth grill.
The practical 2021 BMW X5M:
I am generally a BMW guy, as far back as the E36 even. But this looks like they took a Jag (which is probably my current favorite sedan) and put a ridiculously oversized grill on it. Sorry BMW, nope.
Uninspired, trendy, copycat design. Bigger grill, bigger scoops, side fender vents ... (Did they leave any styling cliche out?)
It's all been done before. But, I guess that is what we have come to expect.
It's the New Coke, I mean, BMW.
When can I buy one? :-)
P.S. Looks better in gray.

Seems for the most part Savageese liked the 540i.
Apparently, the reliability is improving as well.
If those enlarged kidney grilles and surround came in black, then perhaps - just like the new M3. I've seen the new M3 in all black, and the front is less goofy and borderline tolerable.
Hideous!
Nope, just nope. Who is responsible for that atrocity of a front end??! Yikes.

But I thought a coupe was two doors. What's with that?
..the 1939 Maserati 4CL
There's no virtue in being old,
it just takes a long time
It's a sedan, and I can't get past that grille.

Looks like it should say SCHICK somewhere on the side......

the reason so many cars sport massive grilles these days is because of the Chinese market. Baruth claims that Chinese consumer love the big grilles.
But take that with a grain of salt because Baruth is a China-hater.
What's more probably is either that the big grilles make it easier for look-forward radar, or it's just a design idiom that everyone is copying.
Another design idiom is making the infotainment screens look like you've got an iPad mounted to the IP.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
The name of the 4 series designer is Li Seung-mo.
Sedan is a 4 seater with room to sit in all 4 seats.
Coupe' is a 4 seater with useless no head room back seats. It doesn't matter about the doors ;-)

Here is the thoroughly modern P5b Coupé.
Basically a saloon with a 2 inch roof chop.
Bloody marketing!
Apparently Range Rover calls their "sport wagon" a coupe' now.
While checking out the history of the coupe' I found this little beauty from 1934, the "Aerodynamic Coupe'".
The hood badge is still the same today, so try not to cheat from that, but can you guess the European maker?

actual coupes do have enough headroom in the back for four people.
At least mine does.
Getting in requires practice and getting out is like emerging from the birth canal, but once you're there, it's comfortable.

I agree. The grille spoils the look. Smaller would've been more better.
I loved this Toyota SR5 but it was a 2 door hatchback, not a coupe. Liftback was a good name, just as Sportback is for my Audi S5.
Or at least, "like/close to love." My son moved into his dorm at college, I fit me, him, and all his stuff in my Ford Festiva.

I've seen one on the road and no it doesn't.
So you must have very sharp eyes.
The 4 series G22/23/24 with that nose is in production since 2020.
And BMWs have been in production since 1916.
I think you'll find that BMW produced it's first car in 1928 after purchasing Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach aka EMW.
But they did make a straight six in 1916.
Aero engine.
The first car they made was a license-built 750cc Austin 7.
