How many firearms are just lying around homes waiting for someone to break in? They weren't much protection, were they?
Follow Ups:
It makes sense to have a gun in the US.With these kinds of people, I would want a gun too.

'Beer goggles' doesn't even come close to explaining their fanaticism. It is encouraging though, that not all of them are thinking with such paranoid brains.
"Rose-colored glasses" doesn't even begin to describe the anti-gun zealots' point of view (fantasy) that taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens is going to eradicate gun violence and gun-related crime.

guns floating around in our society, often stored and handled carelessly, to a reasonable and rational level certainly would, if not eradicate, certainly reduce gun violence and gun crime. Guns are very often used by criminals because they are so common and easy to get. No, the guys above are correct, so much of it is a psychological obsession that has no benefit to society, and is the cause of a great deal of harm.
The Second Amendment exists, but it, like the other Amendments, is not absolute, and subject to interpretation by the courts. Let's hope the courts begin to take a more helpful approach. Not holding my breath, though.

I say that it's the person who worships a long hard metal phallic symbol as if it is his god-given right to do so.
Hardly worship--I don't even have an altar. "God given"--kinda sorta--Constitutional right most definitely, but "In God We Trust" and "One Nation Under God" do kind of factor-in, I guess.

Well Quad, maybe a better question for him would be does he feel good about drinking and and driving a car at 100mph, getting away with it and then bragging about it?

More than 30 percent of the guns that ended up at crime scenes had been stolen, according to Fabio's research.
But more than 40 percent of those stolen guns weren't reported by the owners as stolen until after police contacted them when the gun was used in a crime.

Is totally silent about this article. I was hoping that someone would step in and defend keeping a loaded AK47 lying around the house.
First of all, let's reference the article: New evidence confirms what gun rights advocates have said for a long time about crime
" They found that in approximately 8 out of 10 cases, the perpetrator was not a lawful gun owner but rather in illegal possession of a weapon that belonged to someone else...
They argue that since criminals don't follow laws, new regulations on gun ownership would only serve to burden lawful owners while doing little to combat crime."

...as I grow tired of reading all the anti-gun propaganda posted by the anti-gun zealots. Those of you in Canada--please stay there, BTW, and there are a few here in the US that should be moving as soon as the border re-opens.If I choose to keep an unsecured, loaded firearm in my home, that is my legal right, and none of your business. Quite honestly, unless invited in, you have no business being in my home, or even on my property, for that matter.
As for the incident with the juveniles in FL, lets talk about the facts. Two convicted juvenile criminals escaped from an inadequately secured juvenile detention/rehabilitation facility, evaded law enforcement, burglarized a secured home, discovered unsecured weapons, and then unlawfully utilized them against law enforcement officers. Two juvenile criminals committing an entire string of further crimes. They didn't escape looking for guns. They didn't choose to break into that specific home with any knowledge that there would be a firearm present. No one was standing there with a gun to their heads, instructing them to fire upon law enforcement. They were just criminals doing what criminals do. How is any of this the gun-owner's fault?
As for gun owners being dishonest for not immediately reporting stolen firearms--that is totally ridiculous. I have a healthy collection of firearms, but I don't inventory them every day. A lot of stolen firearms are not discovered to be missing until the cops come knocking on the door.
People buy (or inherit) firearms (especially handguns), put them in a box and stash them in a closet, desk or dresser drawer, and never look at them--sometimes for years. Obviously, these firearms were legally registered, because the cops knew where to look for the registered owner, but when the owner went to retrieve it from storage, it wasn't there.
Typically, these firearms are stolen by a family member or close friend that has knowledge of their whereabouts (and an addiction issue), and the owner has no idea that they are missing. Unless you exercise your right to carry, or otherwise regularly handle your firearms, you wouldn't know it is missing. It's not like when someone steals your car or TV--you'll tend to notice that immediately.
Punish people for not securing their firearms in their own homes?--LOL. The "excuse" being that so kids can't get to them. I grew up in a home with unsecured firearms. My daughters grew up in a home with unsecured firearms. No one is proposing that parents be locked-up or fined for not securing their prescription pharmaceuticals, household cleaning chemicals, or lawn and pool chemicals. Those poisonings and/or fatalities are just "tragic accidents".
Basic cause of 90+% of ALL "issues" in society, these days--poor parenting--or lack of any at all. Those 12 and 14-year olds in FL were already convicted criminals--how?, why?

Thank you dark_dave56 very well written and I agree wholeheartedly!!!
My hope is (probably) for the first time in their lives these kids will be held accountable for their actions. To look at this situation as though the gun owner did something wrong is ludicrous! Multiple offenses were committed by the perpetrators prior to finding the guns. THEY not the gun owner or the gun made a decision to use them in an illegal fashion.
Philippians 2:9-11
I am sure that if anyone in law enforcement was injured or killed, they would have an excellent case for contributory negligence.
Those gun owners are not blameless. They were irresponsible in their storage of a fully-loaded assault weapon.
'40 percent of those stolen guns weren't reported by the owners'
that indicates [to me] that they weren't stolen, they were sold, then reported stolen after he fact, or crime as the case may be
if that's what you mean by dishonest of course I agree
But now Florida is just a haven for meth heads, and probably after the pandemic will no longer be suitable for habitation of any duration.

I came to a similar conclusion, but for different reasons, back in the mid-70s after living there for several years.....In Tampa / St. Pete as well as down in North Miami....where the Mayor was under indictment while a judge in the next county UP either Broward or Palm Beach made a legal finding on some land while HE owned land in Dade IN THE SAME SITUATION. Guess how he decided?
Whole state verges on a criminal enterprise. Just LOOK at the Colonel Kentucky State House in Tallahassee.....permanantly 'borrowed' from the Indians.
Read ANYTHING by Tim Dorsey. Very Very funny,, but also absolutely correct in every historical detail.....

Decades ago in Tampa I was in a friends car and he was showing off his new "toy". A 12" 44 magnum revolver!
He said he bought it and kept it under the passenger seat in his car, loaded, for personal safety because criminals had been lurking in his work carpark and breaking into some of the cars.
I asked him what he would do if he exited the lift in the carpark one night and was confronted by some drug addict pointing his own brand new 44 at him.
He simply laughed and said that that would never happen ;-)I'm thinking now about a 12yo with a 12" barrelled 44! Dirty Johnny! Dirty Harriet?

"criminals had been lurking in his work carpark and breaking into some of the cars."
so what would prevent those criminals from breaking into _his_ car while he was at work, and stealing _his_ magnum pistol, so cleverly concealed under the front seat?
Your "friend" is the poster boy for people who are too stupid to be allowed to own a gun (99% of owners probably also).

'what would prevent those criminals from breaking into his car & stealing his magnum pistol,'
wouldn't happen, that's what the gun is for, it's a deterrent
see? he has it all worked out via flawless logic
regards,
right. deterrent when nobody in the car.
like I said, 99% of gun nuts are too stupid to be allowed to own a gun.
Give them all paint ball guns, camo outfits, huge fake navy seal badges,
weekly free transportation to nearest forest, and let them play pretend "bang bang, you're dead".

'too stupid to be allowed to own a gun'
isn't stupidity a right ensconced somewhere in the Constitution too?
I'll have to look that up, it might go arm in arms with the 2nd amendment
with regards,
There are numerous criminal penalties for stupid/negligent/dangerous behavior that puts the public at risk. Probably even thousands of such statutes.
We just need a few more of those statutes - at the federal level - around gun access. Should be no big deal.
After the first few thousand or so gun nut fools get locked up in federal prison (no parole in federal prisons) for leaving guns accessible, the word will get around.
. I judge any sound system by how tiring it is to listen to.
Linkwitz
that would help ...
restricted access through better screening [which will require longer wait periods] to high velocity semi-auto long rifles, eliminate high capacity magazines, outlaw bump stocks ... would also help
the goal being to reduce accidents, thefts, and mass shootings
I'm still chewing on a study E-stat often points to, but so far have seen nothing in it to contravene those common sense approaches
regards,
Nt.

The brainless gun nut owner should be charged with a serious felony.

I thought it was a law in California, but the owner will get charged for criminal storage at escalating degrees if anyone is hurt or killed.
Actually, you wonder what kind of neighborhood it is if someone feels a need to keep a loaded AK-47 in the living room.

basically ALL the guns used in crimes in this country started out in this country as legally purchased weapons.
through incompetence, idiocy, or greed of the original legal owners, the guns end up in the hands of criminals who murder our families and our children.
this is not Makesicko. The guns aren't smuggled here from other countries.
They are first owned and acquired legally by fools who think that somewhow they will become navy seals if they go to walmart and buy a gun.

What's wrong with leaving a loaded AK47 lying around the house?
You never know when you might feel the need to shoot up a Walmart.
