I rarely ever watch any award shows, CMAs and Grammies once in a while if my wife wants to see someone on them.

The Oscars are little more than the "Hollywood" types falling all over themselves for how wonderful they are.
The next layer of the onion is the "Hollywood" version of cronyism and "we agree on stuff-ism", which, of course, also implies that some folks are "not part of our clan" and won't be getting an Oscar - however excellent their work may be. Politics is not confined to the halls of City Hall, school boards, State legislatures, or the Federal government.
Let's not forget the level to which "acceptance speeches" have sunk. Profanity is applauded. Practically every political or social "cause" must be promoted, and those who disagree must be denounced.
And then, after the "after party", they all go back to their mansions, wearing their multi-thousand dollar custom-made gowns and tuxedoes, happy as can be. All while they tell the rest of us that we need to be compassionate and giving to those who are less fortunate. When "the Hollywood types" give up their wealth to "the poor" and live in a two-bedroom/1,000 SF apartment without a staff to cater to them, THEN I'll listen to them - maybe.

Profanity is applauded.
You have a problem with that do you? Seems odd to me
"Profanity is applauded.
You have a problem with that do you?"
Yes.
When a person is being "honored" for some sort of achievement, and gives an acceptance/thank you speech, a normal thinking person wouldn't applaud at the use of profanity.

Oh, you mean like when Robert DeNiro said "Fuck Trump!"
I can see where that might have upset you.

I'm not aware of that moment.
I stopped watching that self-glorification "look at me" event some years ago when it became a political platform and speakers couldn't figure out how to spit out a sentence without profanity.

Laughing...
I honestly didn't even know it aired, did not see one commercial. I may have watched 1-2 times in my life if at someone's house that had it on. Sort of recall Billy Crystal hosting one time... awards shows are just not my thing.
starting spouting off about national politics... THEIR job is to entertain, NOT to comment on public policy. NO ONE cares what those brainless morons think! Least of all me!... I did however see a clip on the news about Tyler Perry's comments when he received the Jean Hersholt humanitarian award and they were SPOT ON! Nice to see someone in Hollywood with a clue!!!
I don't know what you did for a living - but you spout your political opinions on this board as do many others. I don't see what their "day job" has to do with being allowed to have political opinions. And people care a lot about celebrities otherwise you would not be excited about blabbing on this forum about how you met Barbara Streisand - if you didn't elevate her "stature" as a celebrity then it may as well be the same as blabbing about Cindy the doughnut maker down the street.
Charities ask celebrities to be spokespeople BECAUSE Celebrities influence people and look at all the companies and corporations that throw money at celebrities to sell their crap. They feel they need celebrities because their product sure as shit can't stand on its own merit. Would you buy a regular steak or a Trump steak?. Will you buy a watch or a Tudor watch that David Beckam is wearing? If this "be like a celebrity" advertising didn't work they would not be spending the money on the celebrity to help sell it.
I don't mind that Ted Nugent is a massive Trump supporter or that Bobby Deniro thinks Trump is a conman. I still enjoy Frasier even if Kelsey Grammar supports Ben Carson (granted because of the same religion but still). Unless they do something illegal or heinous I will still enjoy them if their talent suits my taste. Kelsey as an actor/comedian/singer suits my taste - Nugent, Chachi, do not.
As for brainless - I think that's a bit of a stretch because in any field there are brilliant people and those who are hanging on to their jobs with smoke and mirrors.
So strip away your politics for a moment and you walk into a room and you have the choice to listen to two people discussing an important topic. Person A works changing tires for a living - graduated high school on the mercy of the teachers' generosity. Went to university and failed every course and was ultimately forced to drop out (IQ85). This person becomes a politician because he happens to look good and has a charismatic rile up the people personality (like a football coach) and miraculously gets elected.
Person B is an A student in high school and university in every subject from history to science to math to economics and becomes an actor/singer. Cause he/she can make $100million. Who wouldn't?
If the two people above wrote an examination on the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, world history, and person A (the politician) got 0/100 and person B got 100/100 are you still ignoring person B completely. Should Person B shut up and sing or perhaps may - just maybe we should consider what they have to say over person A just because person A got elected?
In other words in every subject or ANY topic ever put to humankind - person B knew more, way more than person A - you would only listen to person A because their job title was politician/senator/congressperson? And you would 100% completely ignore person B because their job title was actor/singer? Is a person's job/career 100% the only thing they are as people?
Personally, I tend to listen to the smart people and the scientists, not the people who just make stuff up or are university dropouts who manage to be good at speaking angrily into microphones to rile up the easily led hicks in society. The football coach speeches are cool and everything but I prefer the substance over mere words.
How does your education compare to these people? Perhaps give us a resume of your intellect and education to illustrate how much smarter you are than the people on this list.

to read their scripts... ;)
NT
Praise Hitler, Stalin, Mao, who cares? Just make a freaking movie with a plot that hasn't been used 1000 times before.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
there's only three basic conflicts and combinations of them for plots
so really, by now you've seen them all
that's why you're so jaded
or bored with being jaded
regards,
I just read four novels by Charles Willeford and had no idea where the stories were going until I got to the last page.
If authors can do it, why can't Hollywood studios?
On top of that, Hollywood is a bullshit factory selling myth to people who can't tell the difference between what really happened and what happened in a movie or TV show.

Hollywood will screw them up ala James Lee Burke and about 57 other great,
contemporary writers...

Miami Blues , which I've never seen.
The last movie I watched that I didn't know how the story was going to go was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind . Otherwise, every other movie was utterly predictable. The last recent movie I thought was worth watching was Knives Out . Thoroughly enjoyed it even though I knew who the murderer was from the first few minutes of the movie.
Even movies considered classic, beloved by critics and fans alike. Saving Private Ryan , for example. Once you get past the shock of Dog Red, it's just the typical WWII "who gets killed next" flic. The actors are all too old to have been actual soldiers, etc.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
I like Willeford but go through long phases where I forget about him.
Well, "Movie Business" sums up too much about Hollywood.
Check out the recent "Promising Young Woman" for a VERY satisfying won't say anymore.

obviously Hoke Moseley survives since the book is the first in a series of four novels. But Freddy Frenger Jr. has a code of ethics. Twisted, yes, but there nevertheless. Willeford makes him somewhat likable, for career hood. His fate is what kept me turning pages.
I'm sure I'll read the rest of the series.
I've never seen the movie, no idea how bad Hollywood hacked the book.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
'had no idea where the stories were going'
because the author is an artful storyteller
plots only become convoluted when human nature is explored via character development and their interactions ... not to be pedantic but ...well
man against man, man against nature, and man against himself ... through character development those interactions unfold, motivations are explored and satisfying tales are spun ... of course you know this
indeed Hollywood is mostly BS and I think that this is why avid film lovers gravitate to smaller or independent productions because of the emphasis on character development
and a large part of why films rarely translate the storytelling spun in novels to the screen ... of course, as readers there's a greater 'investment' as an audience of one internalizing the story and fleshing out the written word with our own imaginations ... wrong forum for this so
anyway ... here's a link to a fascinating site all about storytelling
careful, you can get lost there
d
...and I can tell by the synopses exactly what's going to happen in every freaking movie. Why waste 2 hours watching? Or longer?
And another thing--why do they all have to be 2 hours long? Or longer?

Heard that in some movie the title of which escapes me...

You do realize we've elected two guys who were actors/entertainers to the presidency, right?
Same with the Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, you name the award show.

...in the big decline. I saw three movies in 2020 but only one was a new production in an actual theatre. I expect that a theatrical release helps build enthusiasm for events like Oscars. There wasn't much of either in 2020.
This YouTube video shows the grist of my attitude about the subject.
Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes 2020 - All of his bits chained
See link:
I stopped watching a long time ago because the hypocrisy and misery of productions are unbearable.
The problem is most of the films are trying to be woke instead of being entertaining.
Bill Maher covers the Oscars and most righties and lefties will agree for once.
Spoilers but chances are people won't want to see them anyway.
They're not trying to be anything other than that. A director who's movie bombs at the box office rarely gets another chance. If he/she makes a movie perceived as "woke," it's strictly for marketing and goes no deeper than that.
As a result, most movies stink. Recycled plots the audiences will recognize and feel comfortable with.
Two-hour plus running times telling stories that could easily have been told in an hour.
And the Oscars have always been stupid. Why does anybody not directly involved with the movie business care?
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
They are on while I am working - stupid time difference. The last three years I have watched all the best picture nominees and my choice has yet to win. I think I have agreed with the best picture winner twice since 1990.
This year's winner was Nomadland which I ranked 8th out of 8. So umm I was WAAAAAY off on this one lol.
I ranked them as follows (out of 5 stars)
8) Nomadland ***
7) Mank ***
6) Judas and the Black Messiah ***
5) Promising Young Woman *** 1/2
4) Trial of the Chicago 7 *** 1/2
3) The Father ****
2) Minari ****
1) Sound of Metal ****
As an audiophile, I suppose Sound of Metal had more of a personal emotional impact on me which tipped in its favor. Rhiz Ahmed was outstanding in the lead role as a drummer who has lost his hearing. It's a love tringle between him, a woman, and his music. It's also the only film I would consider as rewatchable entertainment out of the lot.
Also, there were no films with "big screen" sensibilities like a grand Lawrence of Arabia spectacular. Choosing Mank for cinematography because it's in Black and White is almost as lazy as Nomadland even being nominated for it. Picturesque shots is not cinematography. None of the films felt big with weeping shots of large crowds. They are all somewhat small arthouse kind of films. Nothing with the technical bravado of a 1917 or Ford V Ferrari from last year for example.
