What's wrong with you guys? I was so moved by The Weekend's performance I flushed twice...

Wife and I were commenting then looked him up. Apparently he's a super star that's been (thankfully) under my radar ;-)
a multi-millionaire doing formulaic no-tunes with auto-tune
you know, the usual
regards,
Nice marchers and dancer though.

It's pretty pathetic when they're reduced to second rate talent in a half-time show! The ONLY thing worth watching here is tuning in to watch Brady mop the floor with KC...
Hell, the Stones were old enough for Medicare when they were the halftime show in 2008. And who else can the NFL scrape up from the Sixties and Seventies that's still alive anyway?
Forget about the Eighties, nobody wants to see Mr. Mister, or Flock of Seagulls, or Rick Astley at halftime. Might as well do Up With People again.
The Weeknd? He's there for the yutes.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
come out then there is a chance you might like at least one of them and also appeal to different kinds of audience members.
And maybe some lesser-known artists to give them a chance at some fame.
Glennis Grace (appeal to the Whitney Houston fans)
Foo Fighters - to appeal to the older rockers?? (Nirvana ties)
LP - to appeal to Bob Dylan fans and LBGTQ+
No Autotune required and maybe there is a chance people will like one of the three acts.
Even a major act like the Stones or Lady Gaga won't appeal to everyone.
BoB Dyl...I mean LP
but there are PLENTY of big name talents (and younger) that would be better suited to a half-time show. The Biebs, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Harry Styles come immediately come to mind. It's probably more of a reflection on the music industry than anything else.. The very fact that The Weekend has "won" a Grammy award, speaks more to the low bar that has been set by a failing industry. LOL... My son who has a new CD out is FAR more popular in Europe than he is here in the States!
A boatload of performers turned them down last year. Don't know if that happened this year or not.

...you market to your perceived future because their allegiances and loyalties are still developing and can be influenced. The minds of geezers were made up decades ago and won't be aren't changing. Boomers used to be the sharp focus of the marketers of popular culture. Now boomers are the focus of obscure life prolonging pharmaceuticals, ED remedies, walk-in bathtubs and all the accoutrements of "gracious living retirement communities".
My own personal observation of upcoming generations is that they don't seem as engaged by big sports as past generations. The halftime show was clearly geared towards an audience the NFL would like to have in their future. As a partially related aside, have you noticed that incidental advert background and program "bumper" and environmental music is beginning to incorporate elements of styles associated with millennials and younger generations, esp techno, electronica and EDM? I hear this influence in the music from outlets as diverse as NPR and Glen Beck. Times are definitely a-changin.
"The halftime show was clearly geared towards an audience the NFL would like to have in their future."
What are the stats about how that's worked out over the years? Clearly, you know about that. Do tell.

No can do...bound by NDA.
Excellent cover.

Besides, who can they scrape up from bygone times? They're fucking dead. Even if you wanted to have '90s acts like Nirvana on stage at half time you couldn't do it because Kurt Cobain is dead .
But so what? Let the times change, why should we even care? It's only halftime at the Super Bowl. It's over in 10 minutes.

there's 'hologram concerts' on tour these days
might be cheap & cheerful to book one of those ... maybe Dio?
regards,
No, not really... The asses in those seats, that paid out the ass to be "there" are not the demographic that even knows who/what The Weeknd even is.
The demographics of the Stupor Bowl "faithful" home viewers isn't a whole lot different/younger, either. The 20 year-old "snowflakes" are not the primary audience.
The half-time show was particularly awful, and whoever that female was that butchered the national anthem with her "interpretation" offended me more than it impressed me. Sorry honey, don't know who you are, really don't care, and hope to never see or hear you again...

Last year's Super Bowl drew about 100 million viewers. They weren't all on Social Security, yelling at the kids to stay off their lawns.
I don't know if I like The Weeknd or not. I didn't watch the half time show (switched over to Air Disasters , which was the United Flight 232 episode) and have never heard any of his music.
But I remember Super Bowl IX in New Orleans and Pete Fountain was the half time act. I had no idea who he was and it all seemed ridiculously corny to my 19-year-old mind. My dad liked Pete Fountain, so there you go.
The NFL has to hire artists who are popular now , regardless of whether they're any good or not, regardless if they're still shaking their asses to same sad songs 40 years from now. Regardless of whether old people on their way off this mortal coil like them.
My nieces and nephews watch the Super Bowl and they're all in their 20s. There are more of them than there are of us. Time to pass the torch.
And The Weeknd, whoever he is, still beats the hell out of Up With People.

...and I've had a few of my colleagues that attend the Stupor Bowl regularly--regardless of who is playing. In recent years (pre-Covid), they have spent $5-10K for a ticket (and they buy at least two), thousands more on air-fare, hotels, bars and restaurants, and merchandise--so $30+K for a weekend.
I'd never do it. I went to the last AFC Championship game that the Steelers played at home. I got the tix for free, but still spent ~$2K over the weekend. It was a blast being there, but I recorded the game so I could actually watch it when I got home. There's a big difference between the experience of being there, and actually seeing the game.
If I'm spending that kind of money, I want Fleetwood Mac, or the Stones on-stage--not some garbage I've never even heard or heard of. I don't want to hear the national anthem "interpreted" (aka, butchered) by some chick I have no clue about--other than she wants to be famous. I'd rather hear a 6 year-old daughter of a veteran belt it out--however badly.

If they're academic (college) employees or pensioners, it seems that they're overpaid. Maybe that's one reason why college tuition is so expensive.
There is no, none, zero, chance that I'll ever spend thirty thousand dollars (that's $30,000 - for folks in south Chicago) on a weekend just for fun.
On the other hand, you make some good points. I wanted to hear the national anthem and the expected political antics. Unfortunately, I missed it all because I was setting up the grill for burgers - and came back inside just as one team or the other was doing something or other, so channel-surfing ensued. I say "unfortunately" because I do like to be firsthand informed about the drivel which is often presented. I also, fortunately, missed the half-time show. I expected glitzy lip-sync'd simplistic drivel, and apparently, wouldn't have been disappointed.

The Super Bowl, including the halftime act, is for the hundred million people not in attendance. That's what the network sell ads for.
And you, me, your colleagues...we're old. Our generation is dying off. There are fewer Fleetwood Mac fans every year and more fans of The Weeknd and whoever it was that sang the national anthem.
Which has been butchered by many, including people our age. I highly doubt that Stevie Nicks or Mick Jagger could have done any better. I like Stevie but she sounds like a billy goat.

I think NOT! STILL the reigning Queen Of Rock.. (but second to Janis)! I will ALWAYS love my Stevie!!! Especially in a beautiful Holly Harp dress!
I've got a couple of her albums...but she's going on 73 and does sing like a billy goat.
I used to eat at her Fajita Roundup...

'used to eat at her Fajita Roundup'
I think the entire band did ... those are the rumors anyway
regards,
...when the lights go down, so does Stevie.
Bob Christgau said she was unhealthy both as a sex object and as a role model.

I should have capitalized rumors
why would Christgau know what he says he knows?
never mind
regards,
Evidently he is quite popular, who knew?
Would someone really do that to an in-law?
