2001 and sequel 2010 - all time greatest SCIFI films?
district9 = hidden gem
If art interprets our dreams, the computer executes them in the guise of programs!
Follow Ups:
It moves soooo slooowww; there's abso-fucking-lutely no need for the 2 and a half hour running time.
And it's completely incomprehensible. My wife loves it, I hate it. Walked out of the theater first time I saw it.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
.
. . . what does the Eroica Symphony mean? ;-)
it was one of countless semi sentient machines seeded throughout the galaxy, in fact maybe all galaxies, by the oldest most evolved sentient life form* in the universe to achieve inter-galactic travel & they were used to encourage and seed other life forms to attain space faring abilities ... or destroy them as appropriate ... three were found in our solar system ... maybe four counting a 'minilith' that pops up eventually
*they had evolved to the point they were immortal and pure energy
with regards,
google "monolith found in utah"
it is all real, and recent this week.

oh, that one ... it's not 1:4:9 though ... so it doesn't count
.
sorry that I misunderstood your prior post
guess I was distracted by Tom Brady trying to make a comeback
love it when he gets intercepted
Yay! the Bucs just lost! right after I typed 'intercepted'
regards,
How about 'Forbidden Planet'?
Literate. Well cast. Excellent effects. Thought provoking. And even room for a sequel which was never done.
I can think of a few others.....How about 'Things To Come'? Raymond Massey.
Or how about 'Metropolis'? 1927 Still stands up.
And one of my favorites?
'The Day The Earth Stood Still'.....the Original, not that horrible remake.
Too much is never enough
the man who fell to earth!
David Bowie! the strangest of strangers in a strange land
very strange
regards,
Thanks for reminding me! I had forgotten about this altogether........A worthy addition.......
Of course, 'Stranger In A Strange Land' was an unrelated BOOK by Heinlein........and unrelated to 'Man'......
Too much is never enough
unrelated but tracking several of the same tropes!
Liquid Sky didn't get much exposure but it's pretty damn freaky
a pretty satisfying telling of Phillip K. Dick's Through A Scanner Darkly can be had in the semi-animated flick featuring Keanu Reeves & Robert Downey Jr. ,,, though it really deserved a true budget and roll out
I've got plenty more great scifi flicks in my library
I thought Pandorum with Dennis Quaid was good enough for repeated viewing
I'll stop now
regards,
I've been a fan since the 1980's.
And picked up a mint soundtrack LP last year!
One of the most twisted alien plots ever!

and ...
The film was digitally restored in 4K resolution in 2017 by Vinegar Syndrome,[6][7] and released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on April 24, 2018
the birth of Electroclash!
Made in Sydney,
Named after the harbourside suburb of Fairlight, close to my work on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

you can buy a faithful recreation of the Fairlight program at the embedded link for use with a midi controller keyboard
or, copy / past a software based version to play with as 'donation' ware
[basically freeware that begs for $$ from time to time]
with no musical training needed to just make cool sounds

I was so lucky to get this - I had it hovering in the back of my mental shopping list for about 20 years.
There are some amazing phone based sampling and processing apps available. But they still take a lot of skill to make anything vaguely worth listening to!

Getting quite OT, but this talented NZ artist, Kimbra (known from Somebody I Used To Know) is one who can capture, edit, sequence, all on the fly. Clever.

coo! many turn their noses up to electronica but to me there's undeniable talent in doing it well ... this I know because that I've tried!
regards,
But still, I think 2001/10 very difficult to beat.

No question that 2001 is in the Top Tier of scifi EVER. The effects and visuals while incredible still didn't overwhelm the story.....or for that matter, the sound track.
Some people don't know that some of the effects were double exposure technique.
Kubrick did the first exposure than kept the film Undeveloped, sometimes for years until the 2nd layer could be done in sync.
And of course the screenplay came from
a Short Story (The Sentinel) from Arthur C Clark.....
I'm less onboard with 2010, a decent sequel but not earth shaking.
And while they are not the 'best', I still enjoy the 'Giant Bug' stuff from the 'It's RadioActive' era of scifi. THEM had a a great cast and Giant Ants. Countless others, many of NO redeeming value.
I'm a big fan of 'Mars Needs Women' with Tommy Kirk. And I'll never forget 'Santa Clause Conquers The Martiaans' which featured a VERY young Pia Zadora.
Too much is never enough
big horn sheep by helicopter.
but presumably man-made recently

Alien Nation ... ?
I saw THX1138 'the directors cut' the other night ... not bad
