Wonder how many similar stories there will be, at both federal and state levels.
Follow Ups:
Plenty of blame to go around, as these machines were sitting idle after the company was force to lay off 150 workers after the LAST flu epidemic because hospitals returned to buying their masks from China to save a few cents a mask.
...don't let all this "rah-rah USA--we have to bring production back HOME" BS fool you. The American public has a VERY short memory. As soon as things BEGIN to return to "normal"--the market is recovering, supplies are back on the shelves, international trade resumes, and the daily infection rates/death tolls have been reduced to "acceptable" numbers, no one is going to care where anything/everything is manufactured. As long as whatever you want is readily available, and CHEAP, that's all that will matter. That's what got us to where we are now, and nothing is going to change in the long-run. Sad, but true...

focusing on enlarging our middle class and paying people everybody who works at the least a living wage. Nobody in the U.S. buys Chinese products because they prefer them over U.S. made products, they buy them because they can ONLY afford the cheapest products available. Walmart became a huge biz by providing cheap Chinese-made products.
Faced with a choice of paying a relatively few bucks more for U.S. made products - particularly from companies that I know are paying their workers well rather than paying their CEO 500 x's more than workers - I'd opt for that every time over cheap Chinese goods. Wouldn't you?
Its pretty obvious that people working minimum wage jobs don't have much choice. Take a look at the link showing minimum wage in our states.
Pay your workers shit, sell cheap shit that is all your workers can afford, your workers
have to buy the cheap shit from you, you still make a profit on the shit (even with any
employee discount), and the money just re -circulates like air in a passenger jet, or like
the economy in a company store.
Just make sure your employees that get paid shit don't buy their shit while they are ON
THE CLOCK, because you have to draw the line at PAYING them shit to buy your shit.
Offer "finder's fees" or bonus' to your employees to bring in a friend or relative to
work for shit wages too and... keep on self perpetuating...

Had to laugh when I read your comment about Walmart.
I can remember when their BIG advertising tag line bragged about selling made in the USA products.
How times have changed.
I don't mind paying more for American made and quality. Unfortunately, it's not often an option.
Dark energy? Ridiculous!
We live in an electric universe.
...they'd abandon anything/everything to save that 1%--regardless of quality and/or country of origin.

but the option disappears rather quickly, as in the case of American made masks after a flu pandemic, if folks don't take advantage of it.
So when the pandemic ends, everyone goes back to buying cheap foreign made masks.
Important observations by the country's largest domestic mask manufacturer regarding how we ended up with a mask shortage - "I think it's human nature", "reporters ignored it. Pandemic experts ignored it. Our government ignored it. Hospitals ignored it. Everybody ignored it."
From your linked article:
"KELLY: I have to note that for a man whose business is booming, you know, you sound angry. You sound angry about...
BOWEN: No, no, no.
KELLY: ...Opportunities that were squandered.
BOWEN: I'm not. No. No, no, no. You know, I have been off and on. Of course, I've been selling this message for 14 years, but I'm really not angry. I'm puzzled. And I think what I've been fighting is not the government, not President Obama, not President Trump. I think it's human nature. I think since everybody ignored it - I mean, reporters ignored it. Pandemic experts ignored it. Our government ignored it. Hospitals ignored it. Everybody ignored it. So to me, it's a human nature problem. So I'm over my anger.
...
KELLY: That is Mike Bowen. He's co-owner and executive vice president of Prestige Ameritech, the country's largest domestic manufacturer of facemasks."
So why does anyone blame anyone for not having enough masks?
Proper procedures would be to discard masks after each patient.

Pence delivered food to a nursing home the day before he met with those grocery chain execs?
But what's really shocking here is that Stephen Miller is married. He's such an unappealing person, allegedly so nasty that the White House won't let him do TV.

This is only a portion of it, but I found it interesting...
He would like us to believe that ALL of the positive cases in meat packing plants were due to the 'home and social' conditions of the workers while ignoring the fact that, as in the White House, ONE manager or supervisor COULD have brought it into the factory where it could easily spread to everyone because of the working conditions in the plant.
This, while the White House is testing everyone that works their EVERY FREAKING DAY, in order to keep a President too stupid to social distance or wear a mask from becoming infected.
A President that claims 'testing isn't the answer' because it just makes the numbers go up.

All speculation, including yours. No one knows for sure how it was being spread through the meat packing worker communities. This hit piece is spun to generate outrage. And you drink the Kool-Aid and foment hate. Everyone is doing the best they can in uncharted waters.
Of course, when all of this came to our shores in the early part of the year, what was the opposition doing? Oh yeah! trying to impeach 45. Yep! And all of your heroes were blowing off CV-19 and calling 45 racist and xenophobic for banning travel.
I'll tell you who you should be looking at for malfeasance... Gov Cuomo and his insane orders to put positive CV-19 patients back into nursing homes. He personally killed THOUSANDS of people. THOUSANDS!!! This is what you should be outraged at!
My point exactly!
And yet, this guy goes out and quotes the meat packing company's PR person who originally made the claim that the workplaces are 100% safe and these people live like rats and that's why they all have the plague.
GMAFB!
Oh, and we're going to use a war powers act to force them to open and go back to work.

FDR had two, Leahy and Byrnes. Truman kept Byrne's on for awhile. For JFK it was brother Bobby, LBJ didn't need one, he was SOB enough. Nixon had Haldeman, Reagan, Nancy, and most recently, maybe not an enforcer but an unmitigated Son Of A Bitch with typically "progressive" bloodline's, Obama's guy on the Middle East, Robert Malley.
From Wikipedia and easily verifiable:
Malley was born in 1963 to Barbara (née Silverstein) Malley, a New Yorker who worked for the United Nations delegation of the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN), and her husband, Simon Malley (1923-2006), an Egyptian-born Jewish journalist who grew up in Egypt and worked as a foreign correspondent for Al Gomhuria. A communist sympathizer, the elder Malley spent time in New York, writing about international affairs, particularly about nationalist, anti-imperial movements in Africa, and made a key contribution by putting the FLN on the world map.[6]
In 1969, the elder Malley moved his family—including son Robert—to France, where he founded the leftist magazine Africasia (later known as Afrique Asia).
The Malleys remained in France until 1980, when then French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing briefly expelled Simon Malley from the country to New York, due to his hostility towards the Western world and Israel.[6]
Sapiens, my ass!
There has been any number of expose stories and movies about how crass, rude and egotistical LBJ was... no need to recount that.. He probably only pushed Civil Rights because he knew he would have some sort of legacy if he did.... His racist statements are legendary and can be easily researched. RFK was a hot head and that too is easily verifiable. As much as I admired his ability to inspire people, I shudder to think of his hand on the button for nukes... Yes Mrs. Reagan did have influence over her husband but not in a way that was detrimental to the nation.... Which leads to BO.... LOL... my wife just told me this morning that she read that someone leaked that A G Barr told BO just recently DON'T leave the country.....Apparently there are tapes of phone conversations implicating BO in the Flynn matter.... How stupid do you have to be to have taped phone conversations after Watergate! Interesting times that we live in....

Bald, long head, big ears. He's been almost universally hated since he was in high school. Even Steve Bannon hates the guy's guts.
I'd figure a guy like him would not be marriage material.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Miller's WH moniker is The White Skull. It's hard to tell whether he has a prickly personality or he's just a little prick. I vote for the latter.
Post the whole wiki bio. It paints a more complete portrait of Malley. Every administration may have a SOB, but this one is *all* SOB's and liars.
To equate Bobby Kennedy with Haldeman is ludicrous. To equate LBJ - the man who got the civil rights passed - with Stephen Miller is beyond ludicrous.
Don't keep peeking down the stairs when the adults are talking history.
Sapiens, my ass!
You are to knowledge what Trump is to triathlon athletes.
in a LONG time! BTW, he knows as much about politics, as he does about Jazz.... tried to tell me that Herb Alpert was NOT a jazz musician... If that is the case, he sure has made ALOT of money playing something akin to jazz! He's been a smart businessman besides being a gifted musician, a philanthropist and at his age STILL a handsome devil!
Being rich makes Herb Alpert a jazz musician?
He's the A in A&M... an instrumentalist trumpet player, good at what
he did or does, a VERY good record man, probably even a nice guy...
but NOT a jazz musician.
I think they invented a new category of music at Billboard just to classify
the type of music he (and many others) play specifically to distinguish it FROM jazz.

Civil rights and the War on Poverty notwithstanding. He accused Barry Goldwater of being a warmonger while he, himself, was escalating the Vietnam War.
He was a womanizer, too.
He wasn't the most physically appealing guy either but he had charm.

He's got money, allegedly. I can understand it with Pence, he's not a bad looking guy.
But Miller is unattractive, and from everything I've read about the guy even his family hates him.

this guy... who will be going down for the count shortly....
Miller's one of those guys who gives me the creeps, and it's not just me. His own boss keeps him under wraps.
He'd be on my list of guys I'd want to keep my daughter away from...him, Bill Clinton, Warren Jeffs, Charlie Manson...

What's your point? If these folks are tested and have been staying at home, then what?
Are we do see the next season's American Idol with no audience with just singers and the band wearing masks? And the judges at home?
Is there not an end?
Just say at home.
-Rod
I sure as hell hope you were being sarcastic about American Idol .
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Yes, there is an end, but unlike what our 'leaders' have been telling us, it's not now, or June or even July. And it's not the end of this year.
It's either when we have an effective vaccine (sorry, not this year) or 'herd immunity', which is about 200,000,000 infections (90% asymptomatic) and 1,000,000 (with better management) deaths away.
America's call which one.
It's 5:45 AM here and I'm off to the market to shop. Where's my mask?
It's simply unsustainable. You're suggesting a result worse than the Great Depression. The government can't print enough money to prevent mass insurrections.
-Rod
prudently.
Bear in mind that by all accounts this is PHASE ONE.
We are an impatient, spoiled and impetuous society, there are
340 (-/+) million of us and nobody REALLY knows the extent
of how THIS virus works or what anything resembling long term
effects are.
We get hammered with conflicting info and news from too many sources
about this ALL DAY, EVERYDAY and it's ONLY been FOUR months, probably
hasn't even peaked yet.
We rush (and I don't know what the definition of rush is) to end the
lockdown in a haphazard way (led by the chaos king) I really think
we fail each other.
We need to be smart and I (for one) don't see much smart from our leaders.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
give them money ONLY if the use it to make their airplanes safe to ride in.
If one can filter a virus in a face mask then sterilize the mask using heat alone (at 70C, less than the boiling point of water) then heat and filtration should be possible on an airplane. OK, not easy, but possible.
Give me $20 million and a handful of smart people, I'll find them myself, thank you, and a solution would be in order long before we have an effective vaccine available for the 300+ million of us.
And if you read what I post every single day, you would know that I have never suggested that we do.
We are going to have to adapt to for a VERY long haul. There may be a toilet paper shortage but not (yet) a plexiglass shortage.
As long as our leaders continue to tell us THERE IS NO DANGER and THE DANGER WILL DISAPPEAR SOON no one, either in the private sector nor the government, will invest in the infrastructure required to safely open the country. Every closed factory should be undergoing a complete remodeling for a return to work at safe distances and they should be getting HUGE tax breaks for doing so.
We have three choices. Stay locked down, open up and try to 'go back to normal' as things were while watching a million or more die or...
Spend time, money, resources and most important, leadership at the top, restructuring our workplaces, our communities, churches our leisure actives to survive for the year or two it will take before we have a solution. Hopefully a vaccine and not 'herd immunity'.
Oh, and if we try to go 'back to normal' without HUGE changes in the way we go about our business with major restructuring of our work-places and people start dying again at the rate they did in New York, folks will go home, stay home and we WILL have a Great Depression and likely worse.
Of course it will cost money but we just spent $TRILLIONS$ doing NOTHING for the last two months all the while expecting the virus to just go away on its own.
If a million Americans are dying from Covid-19 every year, you aren't going to have a functioning economy.
One million deaths is entirely likely. Drs. Fauci and Birx project as many as a quarter million dead if we do everything right, and we haven't done a damned thing right yet.
Our society has to change in fundamental ways. There's no going back to the way things were six months ago.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

OK, and the above is in the case of an opening up at the advice of public heath officials, not just an opening ordered by the President using his War Powers, as in the case of meat packing plants in the mid west.
