If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

Nice, but the thing looks like a cockroach. Most newer cars do anyway.
Talking about tearing up the road though, I did it literally. I had a 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado with the W34 option. Between the weight of the 455 engine, Turbo 425 tranny and the differential, with all that weight on the drive wheels it DID literally tear the road up. I mean we are talking asphalt flying here.
I beat Vettes in that car. I never raced title for title though because what do I want with a car I beat ?
The car responded like a rubber band, and still had a passing gear at 105 MPH.
I decided that torque is the way to go. It was hard, even in the late 1970s, to find a place where you could even drive 100 MPH, let alone 200 MPH. Even in that day street races were short.
They never closed the roads for us. I have never even been to Quigly, which is a road here known for drag racing.
Why is it called drag racing ? What is getting dragged ? I remember the symbol with the fingers in like a V which meant "wanna drag ?". But how the hell did it ever get that name ? It is racing, there is nothing dragging behind the cars. So how did it ever get that name ?
Just askin'
IF you know the word Etymology you can look up a word or term's etymology.

Thanx 51, but that still doesn't explain how the word "drag" got into it.
Irregardless (I know) I have won a shitload of them.
I sort of envisioned that in the past, racecars would be required to pull a load behind them. This would give a heavier car with more power an advantage. So much information has been lost, or at least not published on the internet. I know alot of things you just cannot find on the net. Probably so do you. Someone has to put it out there, and if nobody is so inclined, Google will not find it.
But I have beaten those shitcans, weighing twice as much and blowing their doors off because of sheer power.
My cousin had a car that ripped the front seat bolts right out of the floor. That was one of the original Olds 442s. But his was a 642 because he had three two barrels on the Edelbrock. He also had modified rear suspension. I don't know the rear end ratio, but he could punch it in third gear and it would not stumble. Low end torque was where it's at. Acceleration, not speed. That car can do over 200 MPH, but how does it perform in traffic ? You cannot get on an on ramp to a highway and go 200 MPH. That top speed is a cool thing, but you practically have to take it to the Utah salt flats. (actually I would like to do that)
In normal society, I don't need that top speed. But I want the acceleration. Respond like a rubber band. No matter how much they fuck with the torque and the gear ratios in those shitcans there is no replacement for displacement. When you got literally enough power to rip up the asphalt, they got no chance.
And that was American cars. They did not look like cockroaches either. They had style. I used to not like Dodges, but I am pleased when I see one now. I am tired of those cockroches.
One little dip in the road, and he'd be the first Idaho launched Bugatti spaceship!
