... I mean you can't hear them coming.

Esp dark ones. You can't see the driver. And I think he/she may not be looking for pedestrians.
Thought I read that somewhere.
Makes me think back to placing playing cards against the bicyle wheel spokes.
Cool stuff.
... I'm all for that, I will have mine sound like a dumper truck.

If so, I want my wife's Prius to sound like a Harley, a really loud one with straight pipes.

I walk a LOT in an over-packed car jammed city, use all my senses
when doing so (not so much taste...) and those damn things still
surprise me on occasion.

...we'll all have have self-driving cars that will smart enough to stop.
to look both ways before walking where cars might be crossing your path. Crossing the street, crossing a business driveway, "throughways" at schools, parking lots, etc. You know the drill, or maybe not. It ain't rocket science - it's common sense.
I regularly see pedestrians just walkin' along, not paying any attention to whether or not there might be an object which is 20 times their weight coming toward them. Fortunately for them, I'm an alert driver, watching my surroundings, so these idiots have survived when I could have just as easily helped to reduce the population.

I would think they are more careful than most pedestrians, but what is to stop them from stepping out in front of a silent car?

With the development of automatic braking, that is the right solution.
Not making noise without a need.
So perhaps the nanny state can make rules that all electric cars must have the self braking feature.
Then the electric cars can sneak up on people and just stop. Period.
Cellphones screen out everything.

You may well be an alert driver, so am I, but some are not.
Like I said, with electric cars it's going to get worse.

Mike.
