Which were better than nothing. Bear in mind that Canberra can get to over 40C of dry heat in late Spring, Summer and early Autumn.Since then we've had whole-of-house ducted evaporative cooling which is very effective and economical. Only suitable in a dry heat environment. 95% of Sprummer, Summer, and early Autumn is dry.
Ours can be set to automatic, but if it is going to be very cool overnight I can simply run the big fan with no water on the pads.
It does require monitoring of the wind direction so that the cooled air being pumped IN can leave via windows and doors in the lee of the house, as the wind shifts.
Last year we paid for a split reverse-cycle A/C system for the 'listening room / lounge dining room' so that Rh doesn't get above 45%, when we are running the QUAD 63 system. Just for Sprummer & Autumn.

Key is DRY. as you Already Know.
Palm Springs in CA, USA once was a dry climate. Until the golf courses started watering 5x or 6x daily and lowering the water table by INCHES per year.
Now? Summer Humidity and Swamp Coolers no longer work worth a hill-0-beans.
In the older parts of town you can still see signs of former swamp cooler intalls.
Too much is never enough
yes, I did check those out, was warned by our local hardware store to avoid them because it is very very humid in our sector of the larger country I live in.
In dry heat they seem to do an excellent job, in Arizona I was looking at properties many years ago where the homes are built to have a cross-air system which doesn't need AC, simply placing the openings of ducts in the house the way the wind system works in those areas can get you much cooler without the need for air conditioning. This was a long time ago, that part of the country is desert land and they figured out efficient ways to cool homes I would say at that point it was 20+ years ago.
it is 80 degrees F here and it is 10PM, and it is only April 16th, very very strange weather for this time of year, I have a memory, it was never like this so early.
