Turns out my air conditioner broke, it goes into a slit at the top of a wall down to a little referigerator unit outside the apartment, Cannot afford to fix it until I recover from my stress illness and get another job will looks like that'll be the winter the way I've been resting. I need to heal, not sure PTSD or something similar, my shrink congratulated me for quitting, he's nuts too.
Anyone have any tips for getting through the summertime heat without air conditioning?
I am attaching a picture of one of two shop style fans I have, I've been laying low in my shorts on the floor where it is cool, and it is only 70 degrees today. I can gues it'll be worse once it gets into the 100s.
I read a couple of web sites about what to do already, but wanted to know if any inmates had some novel suggestions on how to deal with heat weather without air conditioning if they have even been through a situation similar.
Follow Ups:
Keep windows shut during the heat of the day, and curtains/blinds closed.
Buy a couple of good strong pedestal fans.
Night time is the worst when it can be hard getting to sleep. Aim the fan right at your body and sleep with just a sheet, or less if you need to, to get your own evaporative air con system going by the fan evaporating your sweat.
Cold beer helps.
Cheers,

So, if your heat goes out in the winter, ah, what ya going to do?
Which were better than nothing. Bear in mind that Canberra can get to over 40C of dry heat in late Spring, Summer and early Autumn.Since then we've had whole-of-house ducted evaporative cooling which is very effective and economical. Only suitable in a dry heat environment. 95% of Sprummer, Summer, and early Autumn is dry.
Ours can be set to automatic, but if it is going to be very cool overnight I can simply run the big fan with no water on the pads.
It does require monitoring of the wind direction so that the cooled air being pumped IN can leave via windows and doors in the lee of the house, as the wind shifts.
Last year we paid for a split reverse-cycle A/C system for the 'listening room / lounge dining room' so that Rh doesn't get above 45%, when we are running the QUAD 63 system. Just for Sprummer & Autumn.

Key is DRY. as you Already Know.
Palm Springs in CA, USA once was a dry climate. Until the golf courses started watering 5x or 6x daily and lowering the water table by INCHES per year.
Now? Summer Humidity and Swamp Coolers no longer work worth a hill-0-beans.
In the older parts of town you can still see signs of former swamp cooler intalls.
Too much is never enough
yes, I did check those out, was warned by our local hardware store to avoid them because it is very very humid in our sector of the larger country I live in.
In dry heat they seem to do an excellent job, in Arizona I was looking at properties many years ago where the homes are built to have a cross-air system which doesn't need AC, simply placing the openings of ducts in the house the way the wind system works in those areas can get you much cooler without the need for air conditioning. This was a long time ago, that part of the country is desert land and they figured out efficient ways to cool homes I would say at that point it was 20+ years ago.
it is 80 degrees F here and it is 10PM, and it is only April 16th, very very strange weather for this time of year, I have a memory, it was never like this so early.
This seems right up your alley
Do you have an outside window that opens? Zero electricity used here, and the plastic bottles should be free.
I like fixing stuff. Over the years I have worked on about 10 AC units and was able to fix all but one that had a bad freon leak. They almost all have a schematic inside the unit. Of the 9 of so units I repaired the most expensive part I had to replace was $45. And a number of them were either no part costs, or just a couple of dollars. As technical as a lot of the people on this site are, if you can't figure it out, post what you find on this or an HVAC forum and someone will help.
All you need is an voltage/ohm meter. A/Cs blown the cap fairly often.

"4. Go underground
Head down to the basement on those scorching hot days. Our basement stays so chilly that we sometimes use blankets down there in the summer.
Some people may balk at this idea if their basement is unfinished. However, don't let that stop you. Simply clean out a corner and set up a chair or maybe a desk. Personally, I would rather smell musty than melt into the floor upstairs."
found a quick fix, will be in the basement during the summer months I guess. Got wifi down here, place is a mess but will setup a desk and a chair or something similar.
thanks all for the help, especially the novel ideas. I'm staring at a bunch of boxes and old buddhist statues.
Ours do go down to the north side of the basement when it's hot, lay on the concrete and sleep.

But is a cat smart enough to actually build a basement?
Even plants are smart enough to manage their leaves according to temperature, humidity and sunlight direction.
;)
How about an air duct with fan? Suck up the cold air, blow it UpStairs and stay cool. Basement sound like it has a lot of heat-sink potential.

Do you have an ice chest?

That's what grown ups do, they get broke things fixed.
People down here die without a/c in the summers. Really. One suggestion, do NOT wear an unventilated tin foil hat. In the name of all that's holy, got a f'n colander. An unventilated tin foil hat, in the summer, will bake what's left of yer brain.

I must have put on my CNN hat, I am good for about 6-8 months. Maybe I was drunk when I said that, I thought I deleted that post?

Check craigslist. I just did and found plenty of window A/C units for $30 to $75. That's the simple solution if you can find one that is the same size as the broken one.
Otherwise, go to the library in the afternoon heat and use the computers there for a couple hours. Just refrain from visiting your favorite porn site as you may find your access revoked.

Started my roof mounted Evaporative Cooler today... Starting to heat up here in Arizona... Has been in the lower 90s lately...

nice unit, it is 87F here today.
C'mon bullethead. You recently posted that you had enough money saved to allow you to live for a year without working, and now you can't afford a measly hundred and fifty bucks for a window unit?
When I was a kid growing up in NYC (Sheepshead Bay) only two of the neighbors could afford an air conditioner. The rest of us kept the windows open all of the time and slept outside on the front porch during the worst of the hot spells. Everyone survived, nobody died or was carried off to the hospital.
Or were we a tougher lot back then?
Somehow I don't think so ;-)

Blubber is what whales and seals use.. Polar bears too.
In humans a thick layer of fat is also only good in cold weather.
In hot weather the layer of fat really is a danger to the human body overheating... Particularly if doing any heavy exertion.
Back in the 1950's and even 1960's most people were not fat.
Skinny to average people can bear the heat far far better than fat people can.
So it is NOT TRUE anymore, that people can deal with the heat. Unless you happen to have a lean body mass.
And yes I also currently am a close cousin to the whale... if it matters..
3+4=5,
I totally agree with what you're saying, but there were one hell of a lot of obese people in Brooklyn back in the 1950's and although they were negatively effected by the heat in the summer they were not dropping like flies. The vast majority of them went through their daily lives like everyone else, only they sweated a whole bunch more ;-)
I saw it, I was there! It's all in what you're willing to get used to.
Cheers,
SB
I know a few people quite large that prefer heat. You re right larger folk generally don't like heat.

The best cooling device sans an air conditioner is water.
Water can cool better than any other means. Particularly in an emergency.
(like you are feeling really overheated)
The tap water is almost always cooler than ambient air. And water can suck heat off your body faster than anything else.
SO. I suggest filling the tub with some cold water and just settling in if you feel too hot.
Also fill up the freezer with water bottles.
Placing a frozen water bottle on the sides of the neck really cool down the brain and head.
Place one on your belly..
Keep replacing them in the freezer as you use them. So you have several in the freezer at all times.
Even some in the frige if you run out of space in the freezer compartment.
Also placing the frozen bottles in front of a fan helps.
Water is your best friend of all in high heat.
Look for a portable A/C unit on Craigslist, it vents out a window. Open windows at night, if you can safely, to let cool air in and put a fan in the window to help blow the air in. In the morning shut the windows when it starts to heat up to trap the cool air inside and have the fans running to move the cool air where ever you are in the house. Ground level floors and below will be the coolest. Also, get a spray bottle and fill it with water and spray yourself. Do not use tube gear or class A amps!

set you back too much.
I live in a fairly cool, coastal climate. We'd always have a week or ten days each summer in the 90s and maybe even some humidity.
I didnt' get AC in the house until 3 or 4 years ago.
But here's my plan. OPEN UP at night and get the place as cool as possible. run fans blowing out on one side and sucking IN on the other. Bonus points if you can blow the hot Upper Air out......
Than? In the morning as soon as it warms to house temp, seal it up and try to rely on any insulation to keep you cooler than outside.
When outside drops to inside temp or below, open up again and repeat.
The worst part of the day will be Late After noon when it's just gonna COOK.
Alll this sort of depends on how COOL it gets at nite. Dropping into high 60s really helps.

one tip I read, two ways of doing it.
the west side of the house what you do when the sun shines in.
you know those sun blocker shades you get for your windshield for your car for the sun perhaps. Put that on your windows to reflect the sun out. Other things I've read is to put aluminum foil over the window instead.
there's supposed to be a stick on film to buy that blocks the sun heat on the window but you can still see out the window, I will look into that if it is affordable. also it looks like a mirror from the outside, a small price to pay to get the heat out of the room from the sun.
West Exposure, 4 or 5 floors up in a Brownstone?
Tear out interior walls and insulate to R19 or better. = $$$$$
Thermopane (double glazed) windows, while you're at it. = $$$
Automotive films on house windows? I'm not sure, especially if the REST of the exposure is
brick and gets too hot to touch by 4pm or so.
What's it take to get the AC back up and running?
