I've had this quart paint can for pocket change on my dresser for years and it overflowed recently. I started putting coins in it, not for any particular savings reason, just to keep the damn things off the floor.
So yesterday I take it with me to the supermarket.
Figure I've got 20, maybe 30 bucks.
The machine tells me I can get bills for a 10% fee or choose a half dozen vendors gift cards, gratis. I select Amazon and dump the can.
Ching-ching clatter on and on for like 5 minutes 50 people in the checkout lines are staring at my back. Jokes on them, tho', 'cause now I have $68.02 in Amazon credit! $68.02!

I put extra change into 5gal pail I see its getting fuller so I add more next I look its near empty. I never get the chance to exchange it. Wonder wheres its gone for the past 20 years..
I keep a change bucket in my closet that the family tosses coins into and then we cash in every two or three years. Usually its $500 + by the time we get around to it.
Since banks (at least none of mine) will take coins that are not rolled, I have my kids roll all of the quarters and dimes and then we use Coinstar for the rest.
I just don't see the sense in rolling $100 worth of pennies and nickels. Hours of work to save ten-bucks. No thank you.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
take a few minutes and roll your own with the preformed paper tubes. Think of all the money you're saving.
Don't be so lazy :)
I always check the rejected coin slot when I walk by one, found a nice 1914 dime in one recently.
Your bank will do it for free.
Only if you want cash. There's no fee if you turn your change into a gift card. An Amazon card would be as good as cash for many people.
Not all banks have coin counters, particularly credit unions that don't have commercial accounts.
Banks often have free use ones and they'll give you the cash.
