would it be best to put a tweeter's diaphragm near the mid driv er diaphragm plane? - would have to sit "high"my weak old 1823M might work - wonder what xover would be good? - it could to on top of my lone little midbass horn with 12"
(I have a P-Audio 1"-1.5" thread on adapter bolted to HR6040's throat flange)

The HR6040 certainly looks the better of the two. I cross my 1823 (non "M" so it has a copper voice coil) and 1824M's at 500 Hz on the bottom and 2500 Hz on the top. Assuming that the tweeter you have in mind is horn loaded (and thus directional) its a good idea to get the tweeter in phase with the mid horn which would place it near the mid driver's plane, though the exact location would likely be a bit different depending on the crossover type used. As you observe this may require getting the tweeter up a bit high, so some "streamlining" would be in order to avoid the tweeter's output reflecting off the back of the mid horn and interfering with the integration of the drivers, and also the musical instrument localization/soundstage if this is for a stereo rig. Just a simple ramp would be better than nothing. That's my take on it.

hi Paul, you can also see with the Cobraflex and "1st order" cap highpass, that there's a depressed area with two peaks on either side. I also saw this with 1828 and SM120 so a cap highpass (do all odd order offer this interaction?) may not always be appropriate. Is your horn rig's crossover to mid passive and if so, 2nd order?HR6040 must be a pretty smooth horn the way the final section flares. The P-Audio adapter is good enough for midrange and probably treble. I could compare it to a Gollehon horn about the size of 511, 511 and a Renkus-Heinz like Mark Hardy uses.
I want a passive xover for this toy - not sure what horns "here" for a tweeter - I have a little Gollehon radial but its sidewalls are ~100 degrees- could try a K700 (that would make Tom Brennan happy) - maybe there's a cheap non-CD horn at Partsexpress
(maybe there's some copper coil diaphragms at Ebay - I have K55V but both are blown after a cat did something to cause an amplifier meltdown)
here's the little midbass with a 12" - just about 7 cubic foot external bulk - where would you nominally crossover from this midbass to the midhorn?if I could shuffle stuff, it would be fun to use HR6040 with Sentry IV
SAHF on 511B sure goes pretty low - 24uF is probably large as SAHF IIRC is nominally a 16 ohm driver. There's no attenuation on the SAHF/511B combo below. (Subjectively, I think the ides were too hot)

Those two fangs with the sickout between shows the Cobraflex is bite'n outside it's job description: "We have a lost child at the concession stand"; ) Either way I would go with a first order series crossover, the mechanical roll off of the 6040 horn and driver plus the high pass cap shows a drop of some 30 dB between 250 and 500 Hz, so why add more parts (and phase shift) than ya need? The little mid bass horn looks good on the graph and goes down to 70 Hz or so. And 70 Hz of horn bass is equal to 30 Hz of monkey coffin bass I've found. Tom Danley showed the Unitys at an AES meet once without the subs, and his recording of fireworks was quite convincing in spite of the limited bass.
As to tweeters, how about a curved array of piezos ala Don Keele's CBT36's? You've been a champion of these things in the past and have been hammering away at them when others like me threw them in the parts box. The problem I had with them is that if you run them with a crossover (though you don't have to) they lose sensitivity and can't keep up with horn mids, but a multiple array would be a different story. They are cheap though, and the rectangular horn type doesn't sound bad as I recall. You could buy a lot of them for what one EVT35/350 would cost nowadays, and who knows when Great Plains will solve the problem of sourcing the phenolic base for the diaphragms?

Hey Fred: I have the tweeter from my Klipsch H3 off of the baffle an fitted onto a small "L-bracket" which sits up on top of the cabinet almost at the beery back of the cabinet. The centre of the tweeter top plate and the mid driver's top plate are physically aligned with each other. Looking at it with the tweeter so far back on the top one would think it could not possibly blend properly with the mid horn but it does and the improvement is significant with much improved focus. I did place some 1/2" thick high density fiberglass damping on top of the cabinet in front of the tweeter but this was an after thought and it does not provide much benefit past making me feel a little better.
Give your idea a try and see what you think.

My response is "why bother"
Hey Claude: are you asking me of Fred? For me the answer is just as was stated much improved focus. For a while I ran the Heresy as a two way with the Peavey CH1 which I bought from you. I had them positioned to the side of the cabinet long axis vertical and aligning the driver top plate to the woofer top plate had the same effect better focus.

I guess I wasn't sure what the goal was. That horn is designed for a 2" driver, right?
