Hello inmates,
I rarely post in this forum, I am usually over in the vintage or tube asylums. I am also unsure if there are any speaker "builders" here either, but just on a lark I am throwing this out there..
Has anyone ever made a pair of Zu Clones? If so, I am looking for advice on prototyping a cabinet, and figuring a way to replicate their room loading system with the bottom vent and dense foam pyramid..
I happen to pick up a pair of Zu260FRD/G4/HO drivers at reasonable cost. I am a proficient DIY-er, and also own a set of Zu Omen Standards (actually converted them to Soul Super-fly model)
The Zu260FRD/G4/HO is one of their older first gen drivers, I was thinking of looking for a suitable super tweeter from Parts Express, and trying to build "Zu -essence" clones...
any thoughts on starting a prototype appreciated..

hehehe it certainly does, nice find... I am surprised there is no bracing... looks like 1 inch material VS 3/4?
You see the illustrated pyramid, they are depicting? this is made from high density foam on my Omens,I am not sure how I am going to make this yet. A trip to Micheals may be in order. I have cut high density foam with a hot ni-chrome wire anyhow, but I wonder how critical it is to get the exact same material they used..
I believe the platform of the base of the pyramid is vented with four 1/2 in slots around the edge of the perimeter of the pyramid..
thanks for the image!

I'd love to see the parameters on their custom 10" drivers. Some years back I made a rough try at the Druid with the original Eminence B102.
The current stock B102 with lighter magnet has less extension and less midrange sensitivity. It could still work with a sturdy tweeter and was the basis of one Klang & Ton project.
Zu's 10 varied in weight - did it also vary in Qts?
I liked my fake Druid quite a bit and could see how the real thing would be good.
is the foam pyramid superior to simple fluffed polyfil? does it have any negative effect on effective enclosure volume?

Hi, Mr.9iron,Welcome to the best room in the Asylum. There are plenty of speaker builders here. I am one of them.
When I first read your thread title my first thought was getting the right drivers will probably be the hardest part. Since you have that done I think you have a good chance of success. In regards to other aspects of the project if my experiences are a guide calling up Zu audio and asking about the speakers with carefully crafted questions which give the impression you are a technical savvy audiophile considering a pair of Zu Essence might be a lot more productive than you would presently guess. If this seems dishonest to you I understand, and suppose a plan B would be to find someone who owns a pair and will answer questions and make measurments for you.

Maybe this will help (?) (see link)
One of my audio buddies has a pair of Zu, but they are the Druid model.
He has upgraded to the nano-tech driver, and man Oh man, what a difference, in a very positive way.
