Have some baskets with that model#, never heard of the "S" model
before.

Just a guess here, but they could be JBL speakers used in an old Heathkit system. I know that the Jensen drivers used by HK had an "S" suffix added to thier model number. For instance, a Jensen P15LL became a P15LS and an RP302 became an RP302S when used by Heathkit. I also know that HK sourced various JBL drivers for some of thier systems. Again, just a guess, but one which may warrant further investigation. Good luck, Andrew.
Studio?
Beat me...maybe "special" as in special cone for a PA/MI Mfr.
Are these THAT rare?.
It could indicate Sunn OEM. The F in the F model stood for Fender.
I have seen a few with that model number that also said 8-16 Ohms. I assume they were somewhere in between, and were designed to fill either application?
(these were being used as musical instrument speakers, and most MI amplifiers are pretty intolerant of load impedence, to a point)
Not these...one say's 8 ohms, the other frame, 16 ohms.
