Hi,
I'm just wondering to built a new speakers setup. I'm tracing triaxial units that should replace my Altec 604. Ok starting regardless money issues I'd be glad fot any suggestions regarding differences between / or recommendation for Jensen G610B, University 315-C and EV 15TRX.
Thanks for support!

Without knowing your goals for the driver swap, it would be hard to give a recommendation. Do you have specific problems with your 604s that you're trying to overcome? Are you just looking to experiment with different drivers and compare them to your 604s?
yes - I like to experiment - and by accident I got a nice couple of Vitavox Bitone 6201 & 3200. the sound is amazing - and in regard to their near mint condition (+60 years) - it would be a pity to dismantel them for using their drivers for a new experimental set-up. just wondering to use them for a mono set-up.

looking forward to a report on the sound, but those sure look cool!

no text, except a little residual incredulity as to why one would want to ditch 604s :-)
all the best,
mrh
no - I won't ditch the 604. because I have the opportunity to replace them just by unscrewing the baffle it might be nice to play different drivers. to be honest I read a lot about the advantages of the triaxial speakers and now I'm curious to try it out on the level of own experience. however would be nice to get some suggestions beforehand about those three drivers I mentioned.
Probably there are no advantages ....
Another point to remember is that the box will not be optimal for different drivers. What size box do you have the Altecs in now?
I have... :-)
all the best,
mrh
yes - this is an issue - I have 612B utility enclosures ...
Gorgeous
all the best,
mrh
Not mine, see link below.
I did have a pair of these built, though. This is one of mine...
I like to think of the aesthetic of mine as "Harbeth-inspired" :-)
all the best,
mrh
They are made for 604s but would likely work with the other speakers mentioned
Shipping would, presumably, be fairly pricey, though...
all the best,
mrh
that is one great looking system, baja

They're not the best for bass from a 604 - a bit on the small side. The highs are what they are.
OK, this is my experience, with the enclosures I had on hand, with the unrestored drivers I owned, powered by a Marantz 2270, in my basement.
First, I had pairs of Altec 604c's, Goodmans 905c's, and University 315c's. My test enclosures were a set of Karlson K15's, a set of Bozak urban cabinets (4.5ft3 sealed), and a set of Goodmans cabinets with their proprietary vent. This was a rainy day, nothing to do, unscientific test with no measurements. Just my opinion.
Altec: Great midrange, rolled off treble, light in the bass. This is THE speaker for midrange freaks, but the overall presentation was lacking at both ends of the spectrum for my personal tastes.
Goodmans: Very pleasant and balanced overall sound quality. Its sound does not grab you like the Altec, but it sure is smooth. It did not sound good in the Karlson.
University: My favorite of the bunch. Great low end, especially in the K15. Mids were good, not up to Altec standards, Highs were extended and pleasant.
I realize that this was not a scientific or even fair comparison. Unrestored drivers, no compensation for the Altecs, non optimum enclosure types, ......! But, I would definitely pursue a set of University 315c's, they just might unseat your Altecs as your favorite.
Hope this helped, Andrew.
Hi. I'm interested im the University 315C operating in the Karlson
K-15. Did the original dimensions of 18x22.5x33 have to be modified
in order to fit the rather large 315C into it.
GoodWhiskey
Andrew,
thanks for describing your impressions!

You are very welcome. I just want to make clear that I am not discounting the quality of your 604's or their ability to reproduce music in a world class manner. I happen to like the University drivers better. My dad fell in love with the Goodmans, and one of my local speaker junkie buddies liked the Altecs. If you can afford to, experiment with some different coax drivers. Also, the Goodmans are kind of under the radar, but well woth an audition if you get the opportunity.
Andrew.
So, 3 years later - I still own the GPA 604 II. Meanwhile I rebuilt my secondary rig into a mono system that delivers a lot of audition pleasure (have a short impression by clicking the youtube link, if you like).
However I'd like to restart my main rig negotiations. Because Jensen 600/ 610 seem to be a castle in the air I limited my focus to the University 315. Might be that are some more University enthusiasts around today who could give me some advice where to find a pair and which one is the most recommendable? There seem to be different horn-versions and there is an older green-gold type and a silver-black one called series 200.
Thanks a lot for suggestions!
