I just acquired a pair of vintage ~1960 JBL cabinet speakers. The drivers are pristine D123 12" 16 ohm, and someone has added (apparently) period-correct Jensen tweeters. All are in perfect shape. Unfortunately, to my ears the speakers sound awful- I have never heard such "confined" sound, which I attribute to the cabinets (heavy, huge mahogany boxes on aluminum legs). My quandary is: should I try to get better cabinets for these obviously fine drivers, find someone who would appreciate them as they are and sell them as a package, or part the things out on eBay?
My other equipment includes a Musical Fidelity A1 integrated, Marantz CD63, Soundstream DAC1, Tannoy D20 monitors, Naim speakers wires, pretty good interconnects (forgot the maker). Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I was in the same spot - LE-14C's (LE-14 with a LE-20 co-axial) in old '61 vintage Acousti-Craft Queen Anne style cherry wood cabs. With matching equipment console.Looks were #1 for WAF. Sound was dreadful.
I dumped the drivers and got LE-15B's and 2420's (on Edgar salad bowls, perched on top of the cab).
Sound is GREAT.
Don't necessarily blame the cabs. Part the JBL's out for git-tar players and buy some JBL 15"'s.
